have a 97 p 323 coupe
what are the parts required for turbo conversion
i know the obvious, but are any engine parts needed ie: rebuild or is the standard engine up to the job?

what about remap for the ecu?

Thanx

Turbo

Alright Gav,

I've not done the conversion but had a few turbo charged cars and built a 400hp nissan. In terms of whether or not your engine is up for the job it all depends on what power your looking for ?

I'd imagine the engine would be good for between 350-400hp before you need to start changing con-rods and cylinder lining's etc.

However you will need to change from the head up. firstly I would be looking at trying to source a low compression stainless steel head gasket. you will need a turbo exhaust manifold, the turbo, turbo-exhaust downpipe, a silicone adapter pipe for the air flow meter to turbo, a dump valve would be helpful.

I think your main problem is how you are going to cool and lubricate the turbo charger. You will need an oil line in and out of the turbo and also a coolant line in and out, not sure if there is adapters for doing this ?

Finally, I would be guessing you will need an ECU that can be fully mapped. The labour is that hard but it will be costly and time consuming. I would guess you'd be better off sticking an M3 Evo engine in there !

hope this helps,

G.

You would need

Thicker head gasket to lower compression ratio (the US ones fit)

ARp head studs, stock ones are sh*t and lift under boost

Turbo

Oil feed hose

Tap the sump pan as a return oil feed

Exhaust manifold

Downpipe

Intercooler and all pipework

Custom remapped ecu by someone who know what they are doing, Active Autowerke in america offer a 'remote' service I think

or technique tuning

Wideband sensor and gauge

Boost gauge

and lots of other bits I forgot :hihi

Are you sure that US head gaskets are the same with euro ones. Can I use usa cometic mls in my euro 328i ? Also where can I find arp head studs for my aliminium block 328i ? I didn't see it in any website. Websites has for iron ones.

i would suggest you put an M3 EVO engine in it for better performance and more power and less trouble in the future! Turbo conversions are not very reliable from what i have heard!

why don't you just supercharge it? bolt on kits, that produce 8psi and 80bhp. no need to change the internals either as these cars perform well with superchargers!
there is a reason why there are lots of companys selling chargers, and not many at all that turbo them!

depends on what pressure you want to run your turbo at.

without internal work or injection work (forged rods & pistons, lazer cut metal head gaksets, injectors, remapping. ect), You can run about 6-7PSI safely;

You would need;
Manifold, Turbo T3/4, Intercooler, Pipe work, Downpipe, turbo timer or wastegate spring.

If you were to up the boost futher than that you would then need to think of internal work/

anyone with enough money could have any of these
http://www.koperformance.com/BMW/turbo_superchargers/index.htm

but as others have stated its not cheap they do kits to push 200hp out of e36 318i
,m3,325,323,328 can be upto 400hp with these babys installed ,if your still serious in doing any of this as other have said you gotta make that engine a bit stronger ,if money were no option the m3 3.2 evo with 6 speed and a turbo and also a supercharger now that would be a killer, lol probably cos you about 20000 pounds,35,000$ and for that you could get a well looked after slightly modded r34 gtr.....,saying thaT people have fitted the v10 out of the m5 into the e30 ,its probably cheaper to get a wrote off m5 and pay someone who has the knowledge to install for you, again not cheap but youd be starting with 500bhp,now if you could boost that PHEW.........
