Son.
mine is an 320dmsport auto November 2008, only 36k and immaculate, but I keep mine under the BMW warranty, so no stress at ÂŁ321 for the coming year
but as people have said earlier, the automatics suffer less wear than the manuals

Yes that makes sense, it does take out the stress involved in getting bmw to take notice. It worked for me by confronting bmw, but others may not have been so fortunate. If bmw had not have offered to fix it, I would had had to sell the car. Mine is the same year and around the same mileage as yours and also immaculate. As far as the automatics being easier on chains, I can't see as it makes any difference, as the chain is taking the same load anyway, whether it's auto or manual, it is a manufacturing defect which will inevitably be a problem on any defective engine, manual and auto. Mine is getting sorted now. Which I am really pleased about as I love the car. Thanks for your input, it really is useful. Son

Hi im new to the forum but been gathering info for a while so i thought it would only be fair to share my experience. I bought my 59 plate 520d with 58k on it last April and immediately noticed a noise but had no idea about timing chain issues, I took to dealer under warranty and was told it was timing chain and they kept it for a week and "fixed" it. I was told the bill would of been 2k had I had to pay. I thought nothing more of it then 8 weeks ago at 71k I heard a strange noise again but by this time my car was almost a year out of warranty. I got a mechanic at bmw to look at it and he confirmed it was timing chain again. I couldn't believe it, 13k it lasted. Anyways BMW offered me goodwill and said they would pay 100% parts and 80% labour of what was this Time a ÂŁ4500 bill so cost me roughly ÂŁ500. I also get 2yr guarantee. So I was kinda pleased but also not happy about it happening again. What do yas think?

I see this has popped up again..... fills me with the fear every time I read it, just as well Mrs M's 118d is an M47N2 as it's on about 110k. Mines is creeping up now, approx 42k on a May 08 build I just hope that the autobox does help the issue, surely must given the way it shifts. Just a follow up on this I got mine checked out when in to get the bonnet repaired after being hit by a stone off a lorry, apart from being kept overnight to do the security update recall, it came back clear by them when I complained about "the ticking noise from down the back of the engine that could be that timing chain issue".... it was still on Approved Used warranty and bought from another dealer down south, so if they could've scammed something they might have anyway.

Fingers crossed...... knew I should've bought that 330d though! :D

520d E60 N47 - Timing Chain / high pressure fuel pump finally resolved

Hi, sorry for the very late post here, just thought I would share my experience with you all.

I have a 2008 Manual 520d M Sport E60, N47 engine with 80k miles, which had the timing chain issue and also a noisy high pressure fuel pump (HPFP).
Within the last year the timing chain noise started and up to a week ago sounded like a swishing noise not a slapping sound like I have seen on YouTube when the issue is at an advanced stage. Once every few months the car would also not start, if I left it for a few hours or overnight it would always start.

I originally purchased the car new from the BMW dealer in Northern Ireland and I currently live in Southern Ireland.
I brought the car to the local BMW dealer here in Southern Ireland to check out the starting issue, and they could not diagnose the problem. The fault code was low fuel pressure.

I had also heard a few people talking about timing chains snapping on my year of Car and this started to worry me that the same may happen to my car.

I got to the point that I would not take the car on a long journey with my family incase it broke down.
All in all I was getting very frustrated with the car. I checked into the cost of changing the timing chain just for peace of mind and the figures ranged from 1500 to 2800 euros. However even if the chances were slim I did not want the timing chain to break as I would then potentially need to change the engine.

I had phoned the dealers in Northern Ireland and spoke to the Sales guy on a few occasions where I bought the car to explain the problem. His answer was that it would cost stg 2000 to change out.
Eventually I got a call from the Service manager at the dealers in Northern Ireland and I explained to him that I felt the timing chain issue was a design fault in the car.
He was very helpful and of course did point out that my car was 3.5 years out of warranty which is true.

However he told me to bring the car up to them (200 mile trip one way) and then would look at it.
I took a recording of the timing chain noise as when the car was cold the noise was louder.
I also took a recording of the fuel pump noise as this was intermittent.

They took the car from me early afternoon and told me they would call me the following morning once they had checked the car out.
Following morning they phoned me and said the swishing noise in the engine was the start of the timing chain issue and that they had contacted BMW about it. BMW came back and stated they would pay 1600stg towards the repair and I would need to pay 400stg for which I would get a 2 year warranty.
Honestly I was delighted with this and asked them to proceed.

They also checked the starting issue and as I had suspected the high pressure in tank fuel pump needed to be replaced. I also authorized them to go ahead with that which I paid for.

I got the car back a few days ago and it sounds great no more swishing sound, or noisy fuel pump.
They fitted the current revision of the timing chain as there has been several iterations, so hopefully that will last on the car.
The dealers were very helpful and very professional.

All in all I had always really liked the car as it is a pleasure to drive and I intend keeping it now for a few more years.
From everything I went through on this issue over the last 6+ months I would advise a few things.

If the timing chain is getting noisy get it seen to.
If you bought it new from the dealer go back and fight your case and BMW will support the repair costs.
If you can not get it done at the dealers find someone outside of the main dealers that can do it for you.

Had I not been able to get this done at the dealers that is the route I was going to take as it was a lot less money.

Wow, what a result :thumbsup
I've just bought a 2008 e92 coupe with FBMWSH and 48k. Hopefully I'll have no major issues and I will be having it serviced very regularly.
I've looked at the 'best' aftermarket comprehensive warranties and they typically come in at about ÂŁ50 per month for this car. Maybe worth consideration for the future and total peace of mind.

Bmw 520d touring

Gents

Just to let you all know how helpful this forum is.
I was intending to purchase a 2008 520d Touring with 52k on the clock at the weekend. Having read all of your information i am steering well clear.

It is a shame as I had set my mind to buying one of these cars having had an Audi A6 for the past 4 years, but I do not think shelling out my hard earned cash and hoping I do not get this issue is an option.

I really hope all on here do not experience any of these problems. Good luck and thanks. Ray

chian issue still causing problems for many people - need to act collectively!

BBC had over 3000 signatures on their partition for their Watchdog article, we should obtain that list, add to it and go again at BMW.

I have a 2011 car, 3.5yrs old, 59K miles, full main dealer history. Bought outside of the BMW network, i bought a 3rd party warranty and this is the reason BMW UK won't sort out my chain problems. My local franchised dealer Barons of Hindhead have had the car in the workshop, produced their report so there is no doubt the issue is there and is real.

I really can't understand why BMW are so resistant to bonafide claims, backed up through THEIR dealer network.

i have started to make a nuisence of myself and namely here:-

would be great if you liked and shared this page, and commented on the page AND BMW UK's facebook page

it would sort of be understandable if they were a strugling company, but they are far from struggling

Hi

New on here as I too suffer from the dreaded timing chain issue. I have a BMW 120d M sport Coupe with 72,000 miles which is out of warranty. It has a full service history but not at an approved BMW garage. The crankshaft recently cracked and was replaced with a non OEM part.

My story so far

Noticed a noise from the engine last week and went to google (found this website and the watchdog video). Phoned the BMW number listed on the BBC page and was told to speak to a local BMW service center. I phoned them immediately who advised it will cost ÂŁ140 for the diagnostic. I informed them about the watchdog story who then told me just to bring it in.

The following week(today) I took it into the service centre who has a mechanic look at it briefly. He said it is likely to be the timing chain, however they cannot diagnose this without taking the engine out. This is likely to cost thousands. He also said "you will probably better keeping your money and putting it into a new car"

I have since phoned BMW head quarters again who are looking into what they can do. I don't envisage anything useful coming from it.

Does anyone have any words of advice that has been through this?

Thanks in advance.

Gareth

Hi All,

New to posting here, but I have gleaned plenty of useful information over recent weeks - thanks everyone. Anyway, the long and the short of it is through the comments made here and on other forums I had begun to listen carefully to the noise made by my engine and, yes, the dreaded timing chain issue has struck again. Here's the stats:

Jan 2011 318D; 58k miles; FBMWSH plus 10K oil changes; very carefully driven; stop/start always disabled every trip; BMW warranty ran out 6 months ago - took out the BMW insured driveline warranty (so glad I did)

Local BMW dealer has diagnosed worn chain guides, the car is now booked in for 2 days work to replace various associated components, currently estimated to be around ÂŁ2.5k of work. I have had to pay ÂŁ70 for diagnostic, which I have been assured will be netted off the ÂŁ250 excess I have to pay on the warranty claim. On the one hand, I am so pleased I took out the warranty (I cant remember how much it was, but about ÂŁ250, so I will have paid about ÂŁ500 for ÂŁ2500 of work), but on the other hand I am bitterly disapointed that a fundamental component is failing on such a low mileage car. I wouldn't expect significant engine work for at least 150k miles.

I know this has been covered plenty of times already, but i just wanted to add my experience to the long list. Very poor and I will be going back to VWs in the future.

Oh, and the radio now has an intermittent fault. Just cuts out for no reason and comes back on when it feels like it. :frown

Cheers

J

OK, car spent three days in pieces and I now have it back. The total bill ÂŁ3.5k plus about ÂŁ350 for an injector that was broken in the process. Of this, I had to pay ÂŁ250 (plus the original premium for the extended warranty). It now sounds like a completely different engine - much quieter at all speeds.

I now have a dilemma - stick to the original plan which was to keep it as a long-termer on the assumption that the problem has been fixed long-term; or assume the fix will only last another 60k miles or so and get rid before then (about 2.5 years driving for me); or get rid now. Any thoughts?

We here all about the design faults with this being a BMW forum but believe me when I say that many other Manufacturers are affected with their own issues. I work on all makes but tend to specialize in Bmw, mercedes & Volkswagon Audi group and see this type of thing across the board! Yours being a 2011 car with the supposed "updated components" and moderate mileage is a worry though. A tough decision for you though! Jim

N47 timing chain`

Hello all,

I've been reading many threads on this forum looks for solutions to my chain noise on my BMW. About 8 month ago the chain snapped causing a lot of damage and it left me with a potential bill of ÂŁ4500 from a specialist, I didn't dare approach BMW.

I fancied a challenge and took the engine out the car to repair it and 10000 miles later it's still running and only cost me ÂŁ1500 is parts. Here's afew picture. BTW this job is not recommend for a novice mechanic.

Well after starting this thread back in August 2012 when my car was on 80,000 miles, the car is currently on 124,000 and still running but the swooshing noise was increasing in volume. I believe that once over 120,000 it was unlikely that the 3rd party warranty that I took out when purchasing the car would have covered a timing chain failure and the warranty was due to expire in August anyway.

I've heard one too many stories of timing chain failures on this engine and as a consequence I traded the car in at an Audi dealers and now have a very nice A6, no flaming please :jaw-dropping. It was only after changing cars that I realised just how noisy my 520d really was, the A6 is supremely quiet.

The E60 5 series is a fantastic car that is let down by a very suspect 4 pot diesel. I wouldn't rule out owning another BMW but I will certainly do a lot more research before taking the plunge again. As for the N47, my advice to anyone considering buying a BMW with this engine is don't risk it!

Good luck to those of you who already do.
