My 520D has an N47 engine, build Feb 2008, it has done 128,000 miles and upto a few months ago it was a fleet car with full BMW service and 20K miles oil changes, I replaced the engine oil+filter+air filter.

When I brought it I had no idea about the timing belt issue (even though before I purchased it I did post a topic on a couple of BMW forums about any problems with these types of cars !!!).

Shortly after purchasing the car I noticed a slight ticking sound which was not coming from the injectors etc, after taking it to an independant garage the front serpentine aux drivebelt was making that ticking sound so I replaced that using a genuine BMW part which was ÂŁ49 for a new belt. currently there are no ticking noises.

Although at the time I did look into this problem, I contacted lots of BMW inde specialists, they are aware of the problem, I had quotes from ÂŁ1600 to replace the chain and followers not including the crankshaft, and about ÂŁ3600 with the crankshaft replacement, most are aware of the problems and cars are coming in the get replaced when the chain rattle's very loud, some have come in when snapped and normally require a new engine, or complete rebuild, one told me BMW did give all parts for free as that car was low mileage.

Not sure what else I can do to prevent this, as my car has got 128k miles the BMW extended warranty is ÂŁ68 per month, drivetrain cover only with an excess of ÂŁ250 per every claim and no emergency assistance, abit steep I thought and as I don't do alot of miles and plan to have it for only a couple of years.

Good Thread, good to get some sort of knowledge base on this problem.
Hi I bought a BMW520D 2007 in November 2021 the timing chain gave no rattling sounds. I was paying attention. Without warning it snapped at 259200 km. To my horror I was a month outside my warranty. The car needed a complete engine rebuild. I found a great place for this DAL Jones automotive ltd in Erith the car now drives perfectly.

N47 timing chain snapping still an issue on 2013 models

The timing chain has snapped on my 2013 320d 120k miles. Destroyed the engine. Fully serviced and well looked after. I have seen claims that the problem was solved on post-2011 models but this doesn't seem to be the case. Terrible engineering. BMW completely uninterested as outside warranty.

Hi all this is one helluva thread.
I came to read up on the n47/n47t timing chain issues and it's all very frustrating.
The reason I am here is because I was/am chewing the fat over a 2011 (61 reg) 2.0 520d SE Touring 5dr with 153,000 mls,fsh etc.
The car has a n47t engine which I found from the vin no that the garage sent to me.
I asked the garage about the service intervals that the car had had and he said every 30,000 miles or once a year but from what I've been reading here and elsewhere is that BMW reckon 18,000 to 20,000 mile services which is detrimental to the engine anyway. 30,000 can't be good either but the damn thing is still going.
I can imagine anybody reading this screaming leave it alone.
Stranger than women bloody cars.
The car is up for ÂŁ5,650.
Should I keep looking .
Cheers.
Bri

The N47 timing chain premature failure comes from the weak tensioners fail to apply proper tense onto the chains. Over time, the chains are getting slacked and getting loose. The loosen chain will cause the sharp rattling sound. Normally the rattling noise is coming from the rear part of the engine riteaid survey time surveyzop
