I have a 2017 F48 20d xdrive in the UK with no issues. I've recently bought a 2018 F48 18d Sdrive in Spain which has exactly the same auto transmission issues as described here. Luckily I purchased as Certified Used from main dealer in Madrid with a full 2 year BMW warranty provided as part of the deal. I haven't reported to my local (Alicante) dealer yet as I've been collecting evidence but will do next time I'm there. What I have noticed is on realoem.com there have been numerous updates to the GA8G45AW transmission since November 2018 which no doubt helps explains the background. See screenshot. I don't recall this being mentioned previously. Looking at realoem my F48 20d has a different gearbox model.
I've now documented the issue in detail and reported to the local dealer in Alicante. I had an appointment last Thursday so took the car for a long drive so that the car would be fully warmed up (in 33 deg summer heat) prior to dropping off.

It took a while but I was just about able to replicate the issue (not as obvious as previously) however the dealer rang me the following day and said that they had replicated the issue "It's the gearbox!!" and have reported to BMW for proposed action. They say they'll let me know within a week or so.

Update: 14/7/25 - Collected the car today with paperwork showing new/exchange gearbox fitted. Work done at Benigar BMW, Saint Joan D'Alacant - great service and very quick turnaround.

Gearbox on my f48 sdrive 18d 2018 was replaced under goodwill warranty by bmw cause car gearbox was overheating and going to limp mode. Now new gearbox is jerking and banging whem slowing down in 2nd and 1st gear. I was going to bmw again they check software and they said everything is ok and normal, but is not..Car is so unpleasent to drive in low gears with brand new gearbox so im afraid they put again faulty one. My question is how I can check they inputed new revisioned gerbox or they just put again new with aluminium clutch. This things are for global legal actions cause it is clear factory fault

Just to update this:

BMW are not willing to offer any goodwill as I did not purchase directly from BMW. Full main dealer service history etc does not help.

I have previously purchased another vehicle new from BMW but that is not taken into consideration.

Slightly disappointed that a major component such as a gearbox can fail at 4 years and under 60K miles and essentially be treated as a consumable part.
I did not also purchased directly, I was third owner and they accepted goodwill warranty for this issue and I got new gearbox. Try send email on
kundenbetreuung@bmw.de if EU citizen.

But...
New gearbox starting to have issues just after 10k miles so Im afraid they inputed again new one with factory fault, we need to complain all together or find way to write some petiton to report it

Good luck

We have this too car is 2019 bmwx1 only has 37,000 miles on the clock and is automatic so clearly isn’t down to driving style! Gearbox clearly isn’t fit for purpose! BMW wanted 12,000 to put a new gearbox in! Rather gutted as bought this car with the inheritance my dad left me 😞

I have a bmw x1 2018 and the gearbox needs replacing after 36000 miles i only bought the car 6 months ago so luckily under warranty but the warranty people want to repair the gearbox so now im worried will this only last another 30000 miles

Get the investigation in writing of what the problem is, what repair is going to be carried out and what the warranty will be. I'm sure the issue is that certain parts are made out of aluminium and not steel.
