I agree 22k is ridiculous and your info of 25/30miles is more realistic. However the dealership or BMW UK couldn't point me to the scheduling, stating the car will tell me. Surprising don't you think?
Could you please send me the source of your info find 👍

i dont listen to anyone, i have been in the trade for over 40 years and worked for BMW years ago so have a bit of biased view maybe, i stick to Aisin spec, nothing strange about a fluid change sorting a Gear Box, in my opinion thats what 99% need along with a GB reset, works wonders in my experience
Pity you're not local to me. Finding a reputable repairer that knows their stuff is extremely difficult.
Its my first time owning a BMW (2y) and I'm fed up with it. Now I have the dreaded sos failure that is still coming up after a new battery, so it seems its the unit itself. I mean which idiot thought about no access to change the battery. A rogue car manufacturer IMO creating servicing work and revenue.

not surprising at all, if the Cars fail the warranty pays, the dealer gets paid and the car gets fixed, if they followed Aisin spec the servicing costs would double, private buyers and fleet buyers would not stand for it, BMW know that the cars rarely fail before 60 thousand, after that after market warranties take over so everyone is happy apart from the warrant companies, this is why engine oil changes are so stretched out now that chances of failure before that manufacturers warranty is up is slim, ford have or had one car that had a 25 thousand oil service so technically a buyer could purchase it 2nd hand at 49 thousand miles and only one oil change, total madness IMO, there are 4 cars in my family [3 BMW's] all four are serviced MAX 8 thousand and this is despite the excellent Oils out there now, its all shady stuff in the trade, always has been and the Main Dealers are the worst:rolleyes:

thats a coincidence my SOS chucked a fault today as well, it got a new battery 2 months ago so i think its condensation in telematics unit which is not uncommon. the sharkfin can also let in water, the X2 is easy to get to though so doesnt require an interior strip down like the X1, just the boot seal, 2 head lining clips and your in
the thing with BMW's you have to treat them like a Thoroughbred Race horse and spoil them rotten and then they will generally behave, i forgive the little faults as they are just so good IMO of course

Obviously you're more experienced at the sos renewal as I took off all the side trims, roof handles and seat belt. A roof cover would have been more appropriate but that wouldn't have been aesthetically pleasing next to the roof seat belts.
Where are you in the UK?

if you have an X1 its not so easy, i am in wet horrible Scotland hence the damp telematics theory, i may find out tomorrow if the weather is dry enough and i will have a look and post on here, but condensation is an issue anywhere in the UK so its worth a look, you will need to take the unit out and check the internals, also the fault codes need to be cleared and the Telematics reset, i will update what i find here

so turned out to be a bit of condensation in the telematics, dried it out with a hairdryer and all is good, my car doesnt get used much, maybe twice a fortnight so i suppose a bit of condensation between the roof and roof liner is to be expected, i have taped a couple of silica gel bags to the unit, maybe it will help maybe wont but its not a terrible job to dry out now and then

Great news. I've been discussing this with a colleague today and we reckon acquiring a headlining section and the cover from another model and cutting the x1 to fit, would be an excellent modification. However having the balls to do it is another matter. 👍

Hi everyone!
We are experiencing an issue with a 218 BMW Grand Tourer that we bought completely new from the BMW-dealership in Sweden in 2016. We got the first drive train malfunction warning after just 3500 miles (5000 km) and the BMW workshop told us that it was a faulty EGR-valve. We have since then received numerous drive train malfunction warnings and had the ERG-valve changed at least seven (7!) times. Now at 76 000 miles we got the warning again, the car became powerless and went into limp mode. According to the BMW workshop the gearbox needs to be changed for around £12k. I asked for the fault codes, is there anyone who can "translate" these for me?

Modules with faults:
ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL(GSAW01) (GSAW01) 6 Faults
4218C1 High transmission oil or transmission control units temperature
4203A1 Gear ratio monitoring, gear 2: Clutch C1 or B1 open incorrectly
4203C1 Gear ratio monitoring, gear 4: 6-speed transmission: Clutch C1 or C2 open incorrectly; 8-speed transmission: Clutch C1 or C4 open incorrectly
4202E1 Gear ratio monitoring, gear 8: Clutch C2 or B1 open incorrectly
4217C1 Gear ratio monitoring, gear 8: Clutch C1 or C3 or C4 jammed
420201 Converter lockup clutch: stuck in open position
DIGITAL DIESEL ELECTRONICS(D70BX7A0) (D70BX7A0) 3 Faults
279800 Radiator blind, limit position open: Detected too quickly
CD9468 Signal (status, transmission control unit, 0x39A) invalid, transmitter EGS
2AF800 Information automatic transmission: Transmission emergency program active

TIA!

Anna

There is something wrong on how BMW setup this box on their cars during 2018 (X1, X2, MINIS), they are all failing specially 2.0 gasoline, they wear out the neck of the oil pump with just a few miles in the clock. It starts with a jerk at low RPMs on 2nd or 3rd gear, delays on engaging reverse and a jerk too. The warmer the transmission is the worst it gets, eventually everything fails. In my case my local BMW said " ohh, wierd its the first case we see", you are not under warranty you will have to pay USD12.000 for a new box. I ended up "repairing" it outside for USD 3200, i will sell this car and goodbye BMW im going back to Volvo.
What did you end up replacing if you don't mind me asking?

We ended up replacing the whole gear box since the mechanical parts were all worn out according to the BMW- mechanic. BMW says that the gear box is "sealed for life" but when you look at Aisins webpage you should change the oil after 2 years or 2.000 km. If done this maybe would´t have happend. Other brands that also use gear boxes from Aisin (Volvo for instance) have it as a policy to change the gear box oil within certain intervals. We now have a 1- year warranty on the new gear box so hopefully everything will be ok for the time being. Just waiting fot that drive train malfunction warning to show up again...

Yes your findings are correct regarding the Aisin gearbox. Both the Zf and Aisin gearboxes are serviceable, therefore you have been misinformed by the mechanic at your cost. In my opinion, BMW should be taken to court about this issue.

Thank you, unfortunately I have to replace the gearbox on mine as well. The problem is not the oil, although it's good to follow the manufacturers intervals, but I have other friends with X1's that are now approaching 250.000km and 7-8 years with the original oil and the gearbox works perfectly. I did some heavy digging to find out the cause of so many gearbox failures, as it's pretty apparent given so many people posting here, there are also people with other BMW models with the Aisin gearbox that complain of just as many failures. Also I didn't want to risk getting scammed by the mechanic because I had no idea what was the issue. Long story short it's a design flaw that they remedied on later revisions of this gearbox. If you look up C3/C4 clutch for this gearbox on google images you will see that one is made of aluminum and one is made of steel (the later revisions), I also attached the photos here. As you probably know aluminum is a malleable metal, because it can't take the forces placed upon itself with time it bends and some seals within the transmission loosen, after that loosening process starts the transmission will slowly destroy itself. That's why all the people here have gearbox failures around the 50-60.000 km mark, including myself, that part simply cannot take more. In this thread the only person I could find above 100.000 km had a valve body issue.

My advice would be to find out which revision your new gearbox is, because if you've been unlucky and they've put a gearbox with the same aluminum C3/C4 clutch instead of the steel one, in about 50.000 km you're going to have to replace it again.

I have a 2017 F48 20d xdrive in the UK with no issues. I've recently bought a 2018 F48 18d Sdrive in Spain which has exactly the same auto transmission issues as described here. Luckily I purchased as Certified Used from main dealer in Madrid with a full 2 year BMW warranty provided as part of the deal. I haven't reported to my local (Alicante) dealer yet as I've been collecting evidence but will do next time I'm there. What I have noticed is on realoem.com there have been numerous updates to the GA8G45AW transmission since November 2018 which no doubt helps explains the background. See screenshot. I don't recall this being mentioned previously. Looking at realoem my F48 20d has a different gearbox model.

Hey guys!
I'm having the same problems with the gearbox of my car, a 2019 Mini JCW with 24,000 km.
It was having an anomaly when changing gears, especially from 2nd to 3rd, until one day I was driving and it stopped engaging gears, and now it only goes into P.
And the codes it gave are that the SC4 solenoid valve was closed incorrectly. We removed the valve and it is working correctly. So could this be the oil change or something like changing internal parts of the gearbox?
