Just wanted to compile a list of problems to tackle and ask others which issues they have had and solutions, Purchased N52 with 160k Miles.
Below is list of common problems if anyone can add to list or advise would be great.

Current issues:
  1. Gears difficult to select
  2. Oil around gasket cover
  3. Fuel cap wire broken

Common Issues:
  • Thermostat (60 to 80K)
  • Spark Plugs (60k)
  • Water Pump (80K)
  • Valve Stem Seals (80 to 100K)
  • Vanos Solenoids (100K)
  • Timing Chain (300K)
  • Serpentine belt (60 to 80K)
  • Ignition Coils (120 to 140K)
  • Crankshaft seal front and rear (130K

  • Carbon deposits in cylinder (Anyone done terraclean)
  • Valvetronic motor seal (experience of failure and life expectancy ?)
  • Head Gasket cover (experience of failure and life expectancy ?)
  • Head Gasket seal (experience of failure and life expectancy ?)
  • Oil Filter housing and gasket Thermostat (experience of failure and life expectancy ?) {Heard this can be very damaging as oil can leak onto serpentine belt}
  • CCV valve (experience of failure and life expectancy ?) {This can be cause of oil consumption}
  • Oil change to 5W40 (suggestions on this ?)

Hi Sajn,
I have the 530d with the N57 engine. One issue which is common on this model (F series) is water ingress on the rear passenger floor due to a yellow grommet leaking in the engine bay. Simple and cheap fix (Part no. 51719151866) and well worth doing before it becomes a problem. Another is a leak in the coolant gasket behind the oil filter housing (Part no. 11428516396, 11428580680,11428580681,11428580682,11127810712,11127810707). Then there is the rear air suspension where the pump has no blead valve to let condensation out of the pump and so rusts the internal components if you do not dry out the beads inside. The rear wheel bearings also are a known failure point so well worth keeping an eye on. They are difficult to do when they go and will need to be pressed out, usually a big job that requires a specialist garage to be able to do. In automatics, the fluid is apparently lifetime oil, according to BMW but ZF who made the gearbox say they are to be changed at 80k.
Hope this helps.
