I had the top chain & tensioner replaced by a BMW Stealers in Huddersfield as part of the Quality Enhancement, it was on a E60 LCI 520d Registered 12/2007, 141000 miles with a Full BMW History (11 Services) except 2 which were Independant BMW Specialist, prior to QE I could hear the chain ticking ever so slightly, so I took it in to the Stealers when I became aware of the QE, I had been told by the independant garage at 120000 miles chaim is clicking ever so slightly. (that was a years ago

Stealers followed procedure as per BMW Bulletin & confirmed Top chain to be replaced along with tensioner, I questioned why not the bottom 2 was told they are fine and within tollerance, they carried work out on 26/05/2015 at 140781 miles when I collected car could still hear ticking sound questioned it again & was told its fine Im being paranoid they all sound like this???
Was on the motorway on Friday 12th June at 141203 miles, car suddenly lost power, was viberating badly, I quickly depressed clutch and coasted to slip road and turned engine off to prevent further damage....... AA towed car back to my Independant Garage who has since stripped car down, revealed bottom chian has stretched (But not snapped luckily) when you start the car there is a loud tapping noise like a worn camshaft, hwoever this only happens when the engine is upto tempreature not when cold Not got any Engine management light or fault codes, so hopefully a full new chain set & 2 tensioners should be ok as the timing is not out and chain didnt slip......

stealers have now washed their hands of it saying not their problem I would have to pay for them to Investigate and if they are at fault they would pay....... fat chance of that happening now on a 8 year old car!!!! they will make excuses and blame other factors....... all with a straight face, so dont fancy 4 hours at ÂŁ120+vat plus ÂŁ100 recovery fees only to be told the bottom chains failed

so from my experience if QE has been done and all the chains have not been replaced Get them done ASAP!!!

N47 timing

Hello everyone, first time posting here but i wanted to share what i knew about the topic.
Early this year i started to hear a slight "whooshing" sound like a chain, but very minimal. To hear it, i had to rev the engine to 1500-2000 rpm, and keep it stable, while having the ventilation system turned off. The more i read about this problem, the more paranoid i became :D. In the end I was driving around with the vent off constantly, listening for that slight chain rattle 24/7.
Took the car to the dealers. Got it back a day later with a new tensioner. Chain elongation was minimal and did not need replacing.
Very few people online actually describe what they hear after the "fix". I have my car back, but i still hear the same slight whooshing chain sound when i really pay attention. I hear it slighty more when the engine is warm. On a cold start it's almost non-existant. I suppose this is normal, considering the chain is positioned pretty close to the driver in this type of bmw?
Do the people that have had their cars fixed, still hear the chain slightly when listening under the hood, or reving to 1500 rpm? Bmw dealer said they could do an audio recording and send it to bmw, but they told me upfront it wouldn't convince bmw to replace my chains.
They called it a "comfortsound". It's there but, according to them, its harmless.
They also told me that a faulty chain makes a slapping sound. As long as it sounds more like a whistle, without a rythmic slap in it, the chain is fine. Especially if its been measured...
Still not entirely convinced. Anyone else have any thought after their fixes?

OK (dunno if anyone's reading this) took my 520d in yesterday to Elms in Cambridge under the quality enhancement. They gave me a very nice brand new 420i for a loan car. I've just been told today that they will need to replace the timing chain and keep the car into next week.

They also tried to sell me diagnostics at ÂŁ99 because the car flagged glow plug faults (they always log that fault no matter what, according to my indie specialist, and they're absolutely fine). They also offered me the replacement clutch for the price of the parts only. Still well over ÂŁ400, and we don't actually know if it's necessary because they haven't seen it yet. Can't blame them for trying.

So far I'm very happy with the service and I'm glad that they are replacing the chain and not just the tensioner. Very happy to let them keep my car while I have such a nice loaner :thumbsup

Just to let everyone know bmw have done a recall so ring your local dealer and get booked in
How do we go about getting this thing looked at. Where is the official announcement about it?

I have a 2009 Feb 320D with N47 engine which I bought privately earlier this year ( without even knowing about this issue - I would do research if I was buying anything else but BMW 's best selling UK model - I thot research was a waste of time :) )

Noise wise - I am still unsure if its timing chain - but there is definitely a noise

Anyway I went to the dealer - to ask about this issue . He took the keys and plugged into a computer to get the history and see anything in the name of recall and said - nothing is available.. In fact he probably lied abt the issue saying NOT all cars are affected. Refused to even look at the car.

BTW - my car has a few services missing from BMW - could that be the reason it didnt show up on his computer?

Being an 09 reg car, your's won't be included in the Quality Enhancement. It's only being applied to 07-08 reg cars at present. I believe your car should have a revised tensioner and cam sprocket. It doesn't make it immune from chain stretch, but in theory: it shouldn't snap.

The noise from the timing chain will be apparent on start up. When cold for the first few minutes there will be a rhythmic noise from the back of the engine. With mine, once the oil was up to temperature: there was a lot of vibration and a 'grinding/buzzing' sound between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM especially when I let off the throttle.

OK so, update:

I contacted Elms BMW Cambridge. They took my reg number and from that could tell what quality enhancement work is still outstanding on the car. Mine needed timing chains and the rear light clusters looking at.

They have replaced the tensioner, top and bottom chains, guides and head gasket. The whole engine had to come out, and I needed a new clutch which they offered to replace at the cost of the parts only. I supplied my own, as I wasn't paying ÂŁ400+. I got my specialist to supply an OEM clutch for half that.

Since getting the car back the engine is sill noisy (I don't think that the N47 ever was a particularly refined unit, nor is the sound-deadening in the E60 all that great. Probably so you can hear the roar from the six-pot petrol engines) but the vibrations through the power train have reduced greatly. The mechanical noise from the engine, including the chains is now seamless across the rev range. As an added bonus, my clutch is so much lighter now as well.

The only gripe was that, as it turned out, they hadn't replaced a hose-clip on the exhaust properly and as a result exhaust gasses were leaking into the cabin on start-up. Over the course of a week this brought the check-engine light. They had the car back and fixed the issue, and provided me with loan cars, so no harm done.

Over-all I'm very happy with what's been done. There have been mistakes, including that it shouldn't have happened in the first place, but they've restored my faith in their brand and stopped me from going elsewhere for my next vehicle.

Thanks mate. That explains it and is good news if it indeed te case of updated parts.

Also I will check the noise at different revs to find out the subtleties of the same. Best of luck with yours.. looks like you found a good dealer !

E60 520d Engine sound

Hi Gents,

About 2 weeks ago, BMW carried out Timing Chain guide enhancement. Then a week later, the engine emission light came on so took the car to a BMW specialist. He replaced the EGR valve but most importantly, he said, the engine is too noisy. I advised me to take the car back to BMW. I totally trust him but I want your opinion too.

Below is the video, of the engine idling. How does it sound to you? Is it unhealthily noisy? The car has done over 115K.

Thanks,

Donne

Hi all,

Looking for some help / recommendations for a quality and trustworthy engine repair or replacement following N47 timing chain brake.
Plenty of websites posting to repair the engine, however, would be helpful to have recommendations from those also unfortunate to have had the same trouble.

Sounds ok. The chain noise (as I found out) isn't really related to the noise level of the engine, but rather that specific scraping, rhythmic, sometimes "whoosing" noise people often report hearing.

Mine had to go back in owing to a loose exhaust clamp. It's still very noisy and there's lots of vibration at idle, so something the service manager at BMW suggested I have done was walnut blast cleaning of the intake valves. The vibration dampeners on my engine mounts are beginning to crack, and he said that it could be due to clogged up intakes causing a lumpy idle.

Apparently, according to indie websites, it's a good idea to have it done every 30k miles (yeah course, I'm sure they'd say every 2 miles if they could). My car just tipped over 100k yesterday, so I'm sure it's probably something it would benefit from. Yours probably will too if it hasn't had it done before.

Timing chain just went noisy 2010 F11 manual with 150k miles

Hi All,

Apologies for English first as I am not native English speaking person. But I would like to participate this topic of influencing factors of the N47 timing chain issue.

My engine starts to rattle yesterday when cold start in the morning and I knew it is the common timing chain issue of N47 engines. Very Sad. :frown

It is a 2010 Reg(60 plate) BMW F11 520D Touring with manual gear box. It only had one company owner who done 117k miles before my ownership. Since I had 30k miles trouble free motoring, I have to say love every minute I drive it, I previously owned E39 525D touring with similar mileage, nice to drive but with its 14 year age things start to go wrong every month. The current mileage of my N47 engine is 147k miles with full BMW main dealer service history. I run my own business so my car has been mainly on motorways travelling up and down the country for the past 30k miles, and I also assume due the age of the car the mileage before me would also be mainly done on motorways. This is the only way to bring a 5 year old car(First reg November 2010) to a nearly 150k miles on the clock.:cool

Before the problem, the only sign I have noticed is noticeable vibrating gear stick/shifter of my manual gear box. Apart from this from memory there is only few occasional rattling noise when cold starting and then as I drove off it went away. After taking consideration of my spaceship mileage, I do think mine N47 actually did a good job till this point, I would be stupid if thinking the car will be trouble free under such usage, but reading on internet there are a lot of N47 engined BMW had problem with much less mileage on clock, I am feeling bit lucky in my case. :D

Unfortunately I cannot be 100% confident saying if you drive motorway miles like me your engine will last same 150k miles before the timing chain start to make noise but I do believe motorway miles make less stress on all components. This is the only influencing factor I can contribute from my experience. :confused

I have booked the car in to my local garage to sort timing chain out before it snaps. I have also booked the dual-mass flywheel and clutch to be done at the same time to save me overlapping labour cost, my flywheel and clutch are OK at this moment but with my mileage I think it is only a matter of sooner or later from now.:sarcastic

Thank you for reading my post.

Hi ladies and gents, i was wondering if those of you who had problems with your chains had ever been fobbed off by BMW, the reason i ask is I have contacted BMW about my car and received this reply:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I have had a look at your vehicle details and your car doesn’t actually need the timing chain recall and there are no other recalls outstanding.
If you are having issues with your car and you feel they are related to your timing chain, I would need to get you booked in for an investigation.
The initial diagnosis charge for this would be ÂŁ90.
Would you like me to book that in for you?

I have had NO problems with my car and no funny noises etc, i'm just hoping to avoid a large bill in the future.
Does this sound like I'll be ok, should I trust them?

Cheers, James
