This has been going on for a while but getting a wee bit worse. I had a mechanic mate (not a bmw fan) have a look at the video and he didnt agree with my suggestion that it may be a loose exhaust. I have trawled the net looking for anything similer but have nothing yet.

Any experts seen this before?

Ok, so its just a rough rattling sound that drops in pitch and gets really loud when the car is put into gear. Once revs are applied it seems to go away and wont do it badly again until the car has been sitting for a good 4 or 5 hours. I get a slight bumps in idle after warmed up.

ive got 140000km on it

Checking under the hood I cant seem to narrow down where its coming from.

Almost sounds like something loose to me like part of the exhaust but I showed the video to a mechanic friend (who dosent do beemers) and he decided it wasnt likely to be that.

im gonna take a guess thats its valvetronic related as when you come off idle the valvetronic kicks in its quite notorious for the valvetronic gear wearing and rattling...

i would suggest an oil change and engine flush as part of what you have said could relate to oil pressure...

these engines are notorious for valvetronic and timing chain rattle and wear so a new timing chain tensioner is deffo worth changing for what they cost and to eliminate it....

does it stop as the engine warms up or more quickly when oil pressure has built up?? daft question but have you dipped the oil???

itsa tough one on a forum to be honest but rule of thumb if it goes within a minute its prolly oil and summat reliant on oil pressure thats worn like hydraulic lifters, if it lingers more while it warming up its prolly worn or failing related and not reliant on oil as much...

but i do know valvetronic can make terrible clattering noises (and rough running) and timing chain terrible rattling noises on these engines...

stuff on the front and external to the engine like pulleys and alt bearings etc etc it would do it all the time...

worth checking if its got an air pump too if it lasts for around 2 minutes on cold starts...

Ok guys

Well problem remains. I have just got around to changing the cam chain tensioner which hasnt helped. I have also ruled out the serpinetine belt tensioner.

When we had the plastics off (should have taken a video i know) we narrowed the loud ticking noise down to be right down to the injectors and inlet manifold join somewhere. Mate reckons it could be the IM gasket.

I will note that this loud ticking is always present, it does still get really loud in gear in the mornings like video and I have to think its related.
