it's been around 8 years in various makes with few issues, the main issue IMO is total lack of servicing, it should have a run in service of 1000 miles then every 25 to 30,000 after, Aisin quote 30,000 service intervals, but nobody follows that recommendation
I fully agree. In my opinion and without prejudice, BMW are negligent in communicating that the gearbox is sealed for life.
This appears to be in direct contradiction to the service intervals reecommended by Aisin.

I have always serviced my vehicles at 10,000 mile intervals regardless of the intervals rcommended by the dealer. You might call me old school and I know oil is more advanced now than ever before, but long drain doesn't sit well in my book. For the cost of oil and filter it's a no brainer.

I wanted to change the oil in the gearbox when I initially had issues at 30,000 miles with lumpy changes but was advised by BMW that I could probably cause more problems by doing so as the gearboxes are quite technical and finicky and sealed for life.
In hindsight I should have done it anyway. And you're right, the reason these boxes are not being serviced is because of that bad advice by the dealer. Its kind of waiving their responsibility and passing the book in many ways particularly when the warranty has expired when problems are more likely to occur and the onus and cost of repair then unfortunately falls back on the owner.
In all of my years of motoring I have never had an automatic gearbox issue and didn't expect it on a vehicle that has only covered 47,000 miles.
Poor do really.

BMW have covered themselves in so much as most trouble will usualy start out of warranty or gets passed onto aftermarket warranties or some poor sod with no warranty, as for oil changes, these days they bank on synthetic oil protecting the engine but in reality engines have become so much more complex with much finer tolerances that the oil takes a beating and won't last for extended mileages, i remember when Mobil 1 came on the market, it was the first fully synthetic oil available to the public and it wasn't cheap at about 25 pounds for a gallon, the dealers were still using mineral, i used it for a first 500 mile oil change on my brand new Ford XR3 and would use it for 20000 mile service intervals after with the old oil looking as good as new, but that was the old 1.6 CVH engine which is not even on the same planet as the BMW B47 engines, anyway i got almost 300,000 out of the CVH without any issues or wear and you can still do these mileages on modern engines, but you need to do 8 to 10,000 mile services or once a year. my X2 get new oil and filter every 4500, which is all i do a year now and even with low mileage i still got a gearbox issues, sorted with a fluid change ! it's not rocket science but BMW and others dont care, its acceptable losses:mad:

I remember having to strip almost brand new diesel engines at the dealership I worked at many years ago because the oil quality was too good for initial bedding in and caused glazing issues.
Oh! how things have changed.

yes i remember that too, i worked at an Isuzu dealer for a while and all their engines came from the factory with mineral oil which had to be changed to synthetic after run in,personally i think the engines and gearboxes we have now are exceptional, but the dealers and public need to catch up and realise they still need to be maintained

sounds like a solenoid issue which is not uncommon, but you realy need to see a specialist to narrow things down, parts are available so not all doom and gloom
Hope you are right but the first code was ,,,,Gear ratio monitoring gear 7 : Clutch C2 or C3 open incorrectly . That was yday wile 50 miles from home . Ive manage to drive safe home only issue
was a rough shift around 20 to 30mph ( big jolt ) , In the morning ive taken the car and head to a garage to investigate the problem and the issue went ballistic , After 3 miles i had no reverse ( position on odometer and on shift in R ) car rev but not move and then limp mode the remaining 2 miles to the garage in max 20mph at 2.5k rpm ( wont change any more up gears just rev ).
Had the guy reset the gearbox and clear some codes and have the reverse back but still a joyride . I plan in the morning to see the fluid lvl and quality .
Ill update from there .

you could also check your battery, if its end of life it can cause chaos with the various modules and will do what you describe to the gearbox, no guarantee but worth checking

I had exactly the same symptoms and I’ve had to resign myself to replacing the gear box. Managed to get a used one being fitted next week. £3k in total but better than the £7-8k with BMW… I’ve complained to BMW UK and BMW Finance with no joy. Just ignore the points raised and give a generic response, almost like they have been told what to say in these cases. Hope you get sorted..
