So basically guys, it looks like the end, my loan car that i have only had a couple months with a whole load of installments to pay off left is apparently a gonna. '[inking' caused by pre ignition is apparently a likely cause of my rattle when accelerating, sounds like spark plugs when you hold them close to something metal.

please dont suggest using higher octane fuel because where i live that costs a fortune and also is too simple to fix my issue anyway.

My local mech said all they can do is try re adjust it on their computer and if no hope then its ready to bin. Useless advice considering i work everyday to pay it off, nobody wants to buy a broken car?

Someone please tell me what the hell else i can do? i had some fault codes come up when i last plugged it in but i thought this was just cas of my crappy air filter that was put on and quickly removed to resolve the check engine light but now im thinking maybe its another warning as to possible ignition 'pinking'

fault codes
p0313 ( misfire caused by low fuel)
p1084 (fuel mixture control rich) - think this is just to do with air filter as i thought it was lean mixture that caused pinking)
p0056 ( 02 sensor failure )

if it is an 02 sensor failure would this cause pinking? does anyone on this forum have any sort of knowlage on this

I think you either need to get the spanners out or find a new mechanic; there will be a reason the engine is knocking (pinging).

It could be a number of things, but my guess would be a duff MAF is causing a lean mix and hence the knock.

Was it by chance, a daft K&N Barry Boys air filter that was fitted?

no even worse, just a crappy little air filter on its own, so why would it come up witha fault code indicating rich mixture? could that just be cas of air filter? tbh i needf to run it again since putting the original back on, i just feel liek right now there is no hope. i have not had one reassuring thing yet :(

These forums can move a little slowly, many people only get a look at them in the evenings.

Have you tried clearing the codes and seeing what comes back? Running with the MAF disconnected? Looking for a specialist?

You tend to get more help on here if you put a bit of effort in, no-one is going to be able to diagnose the problem with only a little bit of information to go on.

Don't misunderstand me, I know you're fretting about the situation, but try and be proactive about it.

I Know what you mean but i fear if i pack the post with info no one will be bothered to read through! but i will in this case do my best with nothing to loose!

okay, multiple mechanics apon driving from different garage thought it was 'pinking' caused by vaccume leak, said fix all potential vaccum leaks and should sort, diognostics brought codes back like fuel bank limit 1 and 2 and 02 pre heater or something but my mechanic said this could be 'because of ' an air leak. but tbh put the 'pinking' behind us the rattle sounds more liek a physical loose rattle liek there is gravel in my transmission. only heard with drivers window down when driving and accelerating hard, sounds clearer when going up hills, if i could describe it best, it sounds like a more scratchy popped skateboard bearing being spun. it is coming from lower down the engine or from under the car itself i think, not a vibrating issue juts a rattle, there is the occasional stalling or mor hesitation when taking off but runs beautifally apart from that and that could just be me being paranoid getting used to auto box. all gear changes seem smooth especcially in sport mode. it is not vanos rattle, (that does need doing on my car as it is starting to rattle a bit) but it is a different pitch and rattle completly so very confident this is something else. the car does not have a detailed service history, its more just the original bw book ticking oil changes and that so wont indicate other things done, i could ring up every garage that it has ever been to to see if they could look at the vin history but that would take alot of time! i tried puttting the car on a lift and having my friend accelerate while i looked under the vehicle but could not hear anything other than what seems to be normal noises, nothing comapred to when driving, which makes me think it is deffinatly caused by torque, I ALSO DO NOT BELIVE IT IS THE SUBFRAME ISSUE THAT WE DO NOPT SPEAK OF! agian its a rattle. :)

Hi Smashyland,

When you say you have a "pinking sound", has the fault already been diagnosed as pre-ignition? I've read your posts, but I am kind of confused.

Here are some things I would try:

Have you inspected the spark plugs to make sure they're in good order?

Does the oil look good/clean on the dipstick? Is the level at the right point on the dipstick? When was the oil last changed? What oil is currently in the car?

Have you tried scanning your car with a scanner to see if any codes come up?

Have you checked boots/rubber hoses for vacuum leaks?

Have you tried removing your serpentine/auxilary belt and span the pulleys to make sure the sound you're hearing isn't a worn bearing?

You say the car is rattling. Is the engine physically rattling? If so, try unplugging coils while the car is running to see if perhaps one of the coils/sparks are bad on a particular cylinder. You'll know they're bad because as you unplug the coil, the cars shake rattle will stay the same, where as the working coils/sparks will make the rattling/shaking worse when unplugged

As others have mentioned, it could be bad fuel/air mixture due to a bad MAF/vacuum leaks. You also mention a different air filter fitted? See if you can refit the factory airbox/snorkle as I can't see a reason why they'd have been removed in the first place.

You've got to try and inspect a few things first to give us some more info so we can help you. Perhaps take a couple of pics of your engine bay as you inspect things if you're unsure. Could you perhaps upload a video of your car ticking over with the pinking sound you have mentioned?

Hello

thanks for the information, its difficult to send a video as its only when driving and the wind effects the mic aswell,i now no longer believe its the pinking, i think it is deffo i component issue, vanos does rattle when i rev in nuetral but its a different pitch to when im driving and my friend said he thinks it might be coming from the rear however not sure, this is so frustrating!!! im thinking its the worst thing i wish i could get a video but its not possible! ARGGHH, i dont think its tranny issue, i just dont know im going crazy over this! ruining my car cant enjoy it :( oil is fine!

Hi ,

I'm guessing the noise becomes apparant when you push the car a bit harder than just cruising either when accelerating or going up hill ? Take your foot off the gas and then it goes ? Sounds like it is coming from the front r/h side of the engine?

I've been living with this for a couple of years now , I sort of think it is chain related and been thinking about a new tensioner .

If you could get a video please try because i am strug gling to getone its so annoying! i think its coming from my side but passanger thinks their sidde, alot of people sya its pinking but like i just dont ever feel like i will be able to fix this, find possible air leaks and put super unleaded fuel in seems liek to simple a fix i feel like im gunna spend stupid money replacing everything untill i find it or i will never find it, i might get rid of the car aas its to much to bare!!!:mad

Right guys so nearly every mechanic i have been too think its PINKING , fault codes related to this are
DME: ACTIVATION, OXYGEN-SENSOR HEATER AFTER CAT BANK 2
DME: SIGNAL, ROAD SPEED
DME: FUEL TRIM BANK 2 CONTROL LIMIT
DME: FUEL TRIM BANK 1 CONTROL LIMIT
one mechanic said this could be causes by an air leak, only confirmed leak i have found was a split in the intake boot which i have sealed with electric tape very well so im 99% sure it wount leak from there however i have order another to be safe but still no joy, could it be ping sensor? even though no fault code came up for it? i dont want to spend stupid money on sensors that might be fine :( i think i migth get rid of it at this rate seems to be no hope

Electrical tape to fix intake boot !!

Remove pipework first and replace intake boot that meets ICV ( also clean this out )

Order / replace O ring on Disa valve ( test disa)

Check your coil packs are not BREMI (These were recalled on some models )

Also CCV kit worth doing. pipe from ccv to oil filler pipe becomes blocked / collapses. causing air starvation.

Just a few things to keep you going.

The M54 is a good engine if loved.
