Are they in the same place as an E36? I managed to ram some 6 x9's in mine. And the OEM covers still fit. Had to hammer and grind a little. But was worth it, Still get decent sound at 70 MPH with the roof down.
The 4" ones i took out was in a big plastic mount, This on its own took up a fair bit of space. Once this was removed it was easy. Could of got away with no grinding or hammering if i was gonna cut the card and put the aftermarket grilles on. But wanted it to still look stock. Had to get them mounted a little deeper for this.
I have some Mac Audio 100cms in my rear of an E36. I had them from a previous install. I would have been open to leaving them unplugged and leaving the soundstage in the front.
yea i have considered doing that, and have done for a while via the fader on the HU,
but it does sound better with the rears even with the bias to the font
