Hi

I have just bought this 730d se which has what I believe to be a navi02 dvd sat nav unit, running o/s 8.4.4 hex. The unit is not reading the current 2004-1 Europe road map high dvd that came with the car ie when selecting navigation from the idrive it says something like no map in drive. Ive noticed the cd is not lighting up when the dvd is in the drive.

Any ideas as to what this may be? Is it a case of trying another dvd, or is this a know fault either with the software/type of drive/laser etc?

Can you use a standard dvd cleaner on these navi02 drives, and do you think this my help??

Cheers in advance!

I dont think its damp. The unit is in the boot, so unless the boot is not closing properly not suere how this would get damp, then again Ive only owned the car 3 days, so cant account for what the previous owner may or may not have done. I'll chcek though.

Ive downloaded the v32 software update, not sure if that will help at all, wont install it until someone can confirm whether this may help or not. Otherwise could it be a weak laser reader in the drive?

Nice one pal. Just thought maybe this was down to a software fault (well I hoped). Ideally dont want to have to replace the unit as even second hand ones on ebay seem to be around the ÂŁ400-500 mark. Any other things I can try ie lens cleaner, getting the laser repaired (how would I know its broken).

cheers

I've got the same problem with my Navi02 in a 2004 740d. It worked fine when I bought the car last year with an original BMW 2010 DVD. But over time I started getting the "No disc inserted" more and more until now I can't get it going no matter how many times I try to take out the DVD and put it back in.

I got some advice from the Bimmerfest forum that the reading head might be stuck or not moving properly and was adviced to open up the unit and check the drive.
Anyone here ever opened up a Navi02 unit?
Any advice on how to do it so I don't accidently break anything?

The unit may have paced in, mine done the same thing and BMW quoted 2500 pounds to replace, found a really good guy that repairs done mine for 150 pound plus postage the company are based in Germany and are called elektronik-idee, really worth a look if yr having nav issues they have a website and contact number and are happy to advise

I have had exactly this problem, I'm using the 2010 High professional navigation dvd. Whether this is the actual cause I'm not sure, I have noted the system crashes i.e. says error reading dvd when the navigation is usually on the split screen. Is this true for other users?

I can remove and reinsert the dvd and this usually fixes the problem until the next time it occurs.

I am getting the error message more frequently now, I suspect its the laser reading head as it moves to scan the disc is somehow getting stuck.

There is a laser head unit for this on ebay for around 38 pounds on ebay, I'm not an expert in electronics and wondered if its worth the risk trying a diy ? Has anyone changed the laser head themselves?

Don't ever, ever use those CD/DVD cleaner disks. They don't work and they are likely to make things worse.

This doesn't mean it's your problem but the number one issue with CD/DVDs is failure of the laser. This is often caused by using copy disks (they are not as reflective as originals and cause the laser to run out of spec). If that is the case you can normally hear the laser servo trying to focus (click-whirr-click-whirr....) and eventually giving up.

I've changed hundreds of laser heads - it's fiddly but not difficult. You need to be clean and static free. You should also clean the laser guides and regrease them very lightly with silicon grease. You will probably need a reasonably selection of small screwdrivers of various kinds.

I got around to replacing the laser unit on the NAVI02 DVD drive, which in my case was a dvd m3.5. It is a bit fiddly, and you need to have basic understanding of solder removal,re-soldering to undertake the task. (this is the link I used as a guide for the process, its excellent write up for the mk4 version but the e65/66 should have the NAVI02 and is almost identical in detail inside so you should have no issues - DIY for changing the laser unit in a MK4 sat nav unit - Xoutpost.com). Tip mark the direction of the cables you remove so you know the direction to put them back in.

What I didn't realise before was that the whole dvd drive can be replaced, this makes the process as easy as fitting a hard disk to a pc. For most this is probably a more comfortable approach, it is slightly more expensive however.

Below are some places where you can get the dvd m3.5 drive, open your up first to make sure this is your drive, information is printed on a sticker on the drive.
1. DVD M3.5
2. DVD M3.5 (9307.006.37405) - Navigation Parts

Where you can buy the laser pick up if the dvd drive is m3.5
1. SFHD8C
2. eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
3. Laser DVD M3.5 - Navigation Parts

My drive now has been working well with no faults to report, I will keep things updated....

Not sure if this helpful but just to you know I was able to purchase the Sat Nav DVD drive unit today from my local BMW main dealer, the whole drive unit costed ÂŁ145 plus VAT. My car is an 2008 E91 with IDrive CCC unit. I just gave him the part number of the CCC unit and the car reg number and he found the DVD drive unit part number straight away and in UK stock.
