Hello

I just want to start of by saying thank you for such a helpful community. There are some great advice and solutions.

I thought I'd share with you all my ongoing experience with troubleshooting codes P0721 (Output Speed Sensor) and P1732 (Shift Malfunctions)

Back in April 2011 My E46 330ci starting generating the above codes, the tranny would shift into 'Limp-home mode' and I'd be stuck with 3rd gear until the codes were removed or resolved.

I searched high and low for the answer, sent my car to 3 independent tranny specialists and even sent it to BMW for a full fault diagnostic twice! The results were everytime: Transmission is slipping, you need a new transmission! (My car has only done 50,000 miles).

I eventually gave in and had the transmission replaced.

To my horror! after driving away from the garage the car pulled the same codes again... nightmare! so I took it straight back.

Anyway cutting a long story shorter! the garage tested and tested and eventually came back to me with; your car stereo can cause this problem, so can the size of your tyres and even the Output Speed Sensor.

So, left with no options; i replaced all tyres, new stereo system new speed sensor.

After all this, feeling broke I thought I'd go for a drive to make myself feel better!........ Car pulls the same codes again...... great WTF!

I then take the car to an auto-electrician and for £300 I have the tranny wiring loom removed and checked, sensors checked, ecu checked and I get the result of: Your Wiring and Electrical System are sound! the problem is your transmission although there was a software update for your car from 2003 which has to be done, so it was done for me.

I am currently waiting to get my car back, but I am now faced with replacing the transmission again (not a problem as it is under warranty).

This is the story so far, I want to keep you all posted as I have found this forum to be excellent and if this helps anyone from having to spend their life savings due to incorrectly diagnosed problems, then great I've helped save someone money.

On the otherhand if anyone can offer any advice, please do I open to questions/criticisms/anything! I just want my car back up and running!

Overview of Costing To Date:
1. Fault Diagnostic (BMW) £111
1a. Fault Diagnostic (BMW) FREE
2. Fault Diagnostic (Kartech) £75
3. Transmission Replaced £1980
4. Car Stereo £340
5. New Tyres (all round) £500
6. Output Speed Sensor £75 (inc. Labour)
7. Auto Electrican £300

I'll post the next update tomorrow when I get the full diagnostic report from the auto electrican.

This is doing my head in

Electrics all cleared.

Output Speed Sensor replaced, ECU Updated all Wiring and Electrics not causing any problems.

Do you think its the transmission again? Can a new transmission be faulty?

If anyone has any information that can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Symptons:

Only when Drive is engaged, and foot is on the brake (sat at the lights, or junction). Doesn't matter if the car is warmed up or cold, wait between 10 & 60 seconds, then Limp mode kicks in. I have to restart the car and code disappears or! if I shift in Neutral error doesn't appear.

Seems to be random now! usually within the first 10 minutes of driving.

Final Update! Its Fixed, one year on

Well what a journey this has been, and at the end I do not trust BMW Official Repair Centre (Woods of Bournemouth) and the majority of garages in the Bournemouth & Poole area, except Motech on Nuffield Industrial Estate (They are awesome and very helpful)

Its taken over a year to fix the problem, but I now have certification in Automotive Electronics and have also acquired INPA, DIS & SSS to troubleshoot my own errors.

After diagnosing the problem myself it turned out that when the transmission was replaced, the engineer did not clear the current codes and reset throttle adaptions values and transmission adaptions. After I completed this myself, no more issues have occured :)

I have also completed extensive research in understanding Elecro-Magnetic Interferance cause and effects and also about the Security Bulletin from BMW for EMI interference, and my results indicate a fob off because they didn't understand the problem in the first place (unless you have installed aftermarket equipment and did not ground it properly!!).

I am willing to help anyone out with clearing faults and resetting of adaption values and providing diagnostic readouts if you want, but at your own risk as I am employed as I.T Director, not at a garage as an electrical specialist. Although you would need to come to me for the service. So, post a message and I will get in contact with you via email if you want.

Newboy, Sounds like you've had a nightmare! I recently bought a 330i and I have regular 'warning' issues! I bought a code reader to help with these. 'Apparently' the guy I bought the car from had the steering rack replaced, by a BMW mechanic, and then the airbag light came on. I tried resetting it, but it tells me I have an open circuit. I replaced the slip ring as the steering wheel controls never worked and though this could be part of the issue, controls now work, light still on! I can live with that while I get it looked at by an electrician.

My biggest issue is the speedo. It reads wrong all of the time, doesn't go below 20, then stuck under 50 and now back to no lower than 20 again! If I do the self diagnostic thing by holding the dash button in then the speedo goes all the way round and past the speedo face. Doesn't look smooth. Should I replace the speedo first and then look at the speed sensor, once I work out which one it is!

I have no abs light, limp mode or dsc light as per other posts.

Cheers guys, thanks for a great site.

Chris

merhaba uzun zamandir sizin bu formda paylastiginiz sıkıntıyı yasıyorum. Cozumunu bir turlu bulamiyorlar. Arac drive konumunda ayak frende beklerken korumaya aliyor. Sanziman revizyonu yaptırdık duzelmedi. Halen ayni sikinti devam ediyor. Sanziman beynini sıfırlayıp boğaz kelebeğini adaptasyon yapınca mi aracınız düzeldi. Yardimci olursaniz cok sevinirim. hello, for a long time I have been experiencing the problem that you have shared in this form. They can't find a solution somehow. In the drive position, the vehicle protects the foot while waiting on the brake. We had a gearbox revision and it didn't get better. The same problem still continues. Did your vehicle get better after resetting the transmission's brain and adapting the throttle body? I would be glad if you help. My car is 2003 e46 3.25i
