You should try unplugging the maf and taking it for a drive but the 1.9 m43 engine is slow

took maf out today and there was no deference ....-

 

Would be a good idea to get the fault codes read by a BMW specialists, is the car using more fuel? cam sensor failing can cause sluggishness and increased fuel.

 

There is no eml or engine management light on .. i have never had a bmw before but when the ignition lights are on the eml and engine manage light dont come on? They have never came on while i have hd the car is this just the way the bmw's work? or should they come on when the ignition lights are on?

 

When you turn your ignition on the engine light should display for a couple of seconds along with the usual lights oil etc.

 

I was told by my mechanic that some garages blow the bulbs on the EML when they cant fix it. this could also apply to a seller if they were unscrupulous, sounds like you could have a blown bulb. My car had the MAF plug dislodged but looking like it was on when I bought the car, I discovered the MAF was broken a few days later and had it replaced. My EML comes on after 20 miles with new MAF in it and I cant find any air leaks but it runs smooth as anything and has plenty of power. Mine is a 2000 E46 318i.

Don't worry about the EML not coming on with the ignition mate, very common for some of the early E46 318i' to not have them lit on startup (mine included). Nor does it light if you do things like unplug the MAF sensor, however the later / larger engined varients do. :eek You can confirm that the light is working, by doing a cluster test in the hidden menu within the clocks.

In response to your power, do you notice more when hot or cold?
How does the car idle both cold \ warm?
What is the fuel consumption like?
Is there a particular RMP range that you start to notice lack of power?

What was the mileage of yours and his BMW? And was his standard like yours?

 

If i do cluster test all lights work.. when i unplugged the MAF then eml light was still off .. there seems to be a little more power when car is cold .. both mileage about same 2k difference ,, do u think it would be worth getting it on the computer to check?

 

when the car is hot some times its like it gives u a boost at around 3500rpm but only does this some of the times ,, fuel i get about 30 - 35 miles for £10

 

I get same mileage from mine so I would be interested to see if anyone thinks this is low. my light is still on but the car runs really sweet with plenty of power so for now I am ignoring it as the garage said it's nothing serious. I hope they are correct. 8D

 

is there a knock sensor in these models ? ? Had a car before and the power that should have been there wasnt and it drove perfect and was getting the proper mpg. Spent ages changing over sensors,maf's you name. Turned out to be knock sensor gone which was pulling back the timing giving a lack of power but drove completely normal

 

35 miles on a tenner, that is rubbish I get that with a gallon and mine is a 318, 1.9 m43 engine and my check engine light shows on display at start up for a few seconds

 

Im goin to get it booked into bmw after xmas see if they can pick up any faults

I tend to get 50 miles to £10, 100 to £20 etc.

It sounds like it could be your MAF. I had the same symptoms. If you unplug the MAF when it's cold and give it some beans does it feel more responsive?

 

Just ordered a new MAF, the last one I bought was second hand from a breakers so I am going to see what difference a brand new one makes. Sorry to hijack this post! 8D

 

It's a 2000 318 ci mate, get 35 mpg round town and about 47 on motorway average

 

I deffo have issues then. I get 35 on motorway and 25 round town!

 

Try as said and unplug the maf and take it for a drive and get the codes read at a garage

 

got my problems sorted. changed maf for after market new part and is running fine no EML anymore and getting 35 mpg around town.
