X3 Replace Rear ABS Reluctor Rings

Evening All.

Been having few battles with my X3 (on another thread) and have got all the engine related problems sorted.

Went out for a long drive earlier and had a small jolt at about 40mph and then some yellow warning lights (abs, 4x4/traction,tyre pressure). Got home and looked at the codes and the drivers rear abs sensor is showing a fault.

That wheel/area also smells of burning plastic which would make sense as a garage recently said my rear reluctor rings are corroded and the ABS sensors are touching them.

Anyway....

Anyone know how hard it is to get at the reluctor rings? There's lots of places selling them for the X3 and it's far cheaper than having a garage send the shafts away to be refurbed.

How hard can it be!! :)

Wheel off, caliper, disc. Then remove enough so i can pull the driveshaft out of the hub and get at the reluctor ring.

Break off the old corroded ring. Chean it all up and fit the new ring on. Either heating it or some are glued on :S

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Cheers jagrs. But think mine are too far gone and would rather replace them and do it properly.

Worst case, I've had a quote for ÂŁ500 at a BMW indy to remove the driveshafts, they send them away to be refurbed and they then refit with new sensors.

But the parts would cost me about ÂŁ80 so think I'll try it myself. There's loads of posts on 1 series and 3 series forums about replacing them.

How hard can it be... haha :jaw-dropping

I'll defo sort out a "how to" :)

Any idea what tools i'll need. Will I need a puller?

Been reading some steps for other bmw reluctor ring replacements and as far as I can tell. Once the caliper & disc are off. I undo a nut on the middle of the hub along with a few others and can then "gently" tap the driveshaft out of the hub without having to remove loads of suspension/arms?!?

I've got a decent toolkit but just want to be prepared!

I'll also probably do the disc & pads while im there :)

Hi All,

Just had an interesting chat with a BMW indy regarding my reluctor/abs issues.

They said that this happens all the time on the 1 & 3 series. A reliable fix (their words) is to clean off the worst of the corrosion from the reluctor ring. Then remove the ABS sensor and refit with a washer so it's spaced a mm or two further out.

At worst I'll have to replace the ABS sensor but won't need to get the driveshaft out/off.

Sounds like a winner to me but has anyone done/heard of this?

Thanks :)

Right..

Had the wheels off and have removed the sensors and cleaned everything up.

One sides sensor has clearly been rubbing so I've stuck 2 washers behind the bolt. Quick drive and all is good.

Did the same on the other side and straight away had yellow warning lights. Checked the codes and had a abs air gap error.

Removed the wheel and looked at the sensor again and that one is clean and doesn't look like any rubbing has happened so I've refitted with no washers.

It just shows that the air gap has to be spot on.

The washers I used were about .7mm thick each so about 1.5mm in total.

This has saved me a good bit of money and a lot of hassle :)

Hi I could really do with some advice please. I’m having similar issues with my x3 20d. I’ve got an error code of 5e34, wheel speed air gap. I was going to give it a go after reading your thread. Is this a case of getting new abs sensors are do I just need to place a washer on the old 1.
Any help is appreciated.

new sensors would make the gap too close with washers,,with the old sensors being worn the gap increases,,so the washer closes this gap...when the corrosion happens..it makes the reluctor ring closer to the sensor and rubs on it..creating a gap..its not the way to do it really,,as the reluctor ring will probably crack and crumble..how long would this ytake is anyones guess, but if it does happen, then you know the fix..
