I have two micro cameras under the bonnet of my M5 for this exact reason.

If nobody else has touched the car except bmw then logic dictates it’s happened on their watch.

the fault code will be stored for this and it’s imperative you get the time and date that it first occurred. However, seeming as though the dealer in question has the car, you might struggle to get the data off them if they’re not prepared to give it to you.

 

Thanks. They told me the date that the fault registered. It wasn’t on this struts visit. But most likely happened when the brake fluid was changed a couple of months ago.

 

Doesn’t look a clean enough cut to be done with cutters to me, I would say it’s more like incompetence than sabotage and cable has been routed wrong and trapped in something.

Sorry to add a side track... but 5 year bonnet strut replacement?! Sounds made up! Is that a digitally tracked service thats required to keep a full service history?

 

in old service books for some cars there was a section for air bag component replacement, air bags have a life but in reality who ever replaces them at the set amount of years?

can’t imagine many people check the air bag components have been replaced when checking service history though

Don’t write off a mouse or rat cutting through that cable. I opened my bonnet the other day and there was a ‘cute’ harvest/field mouse merrily eating through the insulation and ID tag of the car’s positive cable (where you connect for a jump start).
I looked it up and there’s loads of cases of it, including brake hoses as they’re made of something now which they’re really attracted to.
I honestly wouldn’t have thought BMW would do sabotage. As for their solution to replace the loom at £1,700, that is ridiculous when a soldered cable repair would be ideal.
For that reason I wouldn’t go them again, but not sabotage!

Hi all,

A passenger protection system light came on my 2020 330e. Along with a chassis check up light.
The bonnet struts 5 year replacement was due in June this year. Thinking that it was related to the warning message I had the struts replaced by a BMW main dealer.
As I started the car once the new struts had been fitted the warning light message changed to do not open bonnet. Passenger protection system warning message was also displayed.
They had also scratched my car which had swirl marks everywhere despite being told not to wash my car.
I emailed them but heard nothing until a few days later ie today. I immediately emailed back and a phone call later I was taking the car back to BMW.
They checked the car and found that a cable had been cut. Turns out to cost £1700 to replace.
They couldn’t explain how it had been cut. I came home in shock and looked around the bonnet.
To me it looks like someone has intentionally damaged the cable! Which has then severed the cable in two.
No one has been working in the engine bay or opened it but BMW.

False.
BMW makes vehicles but doesn't repair them. You have been to a dealer who has paid for a franchise enabling them to place signs outside their premises.
I'd suggest your wiring was chewed by rodents, probably a large rat.
