My MID keeps giving spurious external lamp failures when they seem to be working although some can be intermittent in being on/off.
Fuses are OK as also the bulbs, and changing them makes no difference.
Is it likely that the LKM has a fault.?, and how can I test it (if at all)
Regards.

Its bizarre.!
Currently, the following are siad to have a fault:
1 brake light
f/fog light
low beam
number plate
They all work, except the number plate R side is intermittent.
There is no problem placing in reverse.
If I switch on the rear fogs, then only the L hand works, and the R side and adjacent rear light dont work, switching off the rear fogs, and the adjacent rear light returns.
I know the bulbs are ok by swapping.

Check the loom(s) between the boot lid and the body. If you strip back the rubber you'll almost certainly find some broken (or breaking) wires. Easy enough fix with some solder and heat-shrink. The bizarre behaviour is because you will have lost a ground and the current is running through whatever path it can find to ground.

Then check the looms running to the headlamp pods. Same story - the moving wires can fatigue and fail.

Some progress after a little belated logical thinking.
Its only the R hand light cluster within the boot lid: R number plate light/R fog and R reverse light.
Open the boot lid, and they work!
Jiggle the pressure switch and they are intermittent.
Close the boot, they are off.
How can I release the pressure switch and get at the wiring, there is not enough slack to be able to get through the lid carpet
Regards.

No, it's all to do with the hinge wiring looms as thepurpleblob has said. The loss of some of the conductors cause strange problems - the usual one is that you get bulb-failure warnings when the car is put in reverse due to the loss of the chassis conductor on one side of the boot. The ground connection is shared between certain bulbs - sticking the car in reverse removes the ground connection - as does pressing the boot push-switch - it just affects a different chain of bulbs. So, get the wires separated out of the looms and find the dead one (it will probably be BROWN).

Get rid of both of the cable covers. I worried about the cutting them off but you will have to do it at some point. Once it's been done your problems will be come clear and all you need is solder, shrink tube, some self amalgamating tape and something to stop it coming off under friction (i used black insulating tape).
