Please help
My 320d is burning oil. Its using about 1litre per 6000miles. The car has done 156,000miles now and had the usual new turbo at 100,000. There arent any drips on the outside of the engine or on to my drive. When under throttle load (more than a fairy touch on the accelerator pedal) i contribute to the hole in the ozone layer considerably. During the day you can see black and slight blue smoke but in head lights at night all you can see is smoke!!! Its fine if i potter around bit is embarrassing if i actually need to accelerate.
I do know that one of the glow plugs need replacing but surley this wouldnt be the cause of the oil burning but would be for the black smoke. I've had the EGR of and given that a good clean. I 've had the pipe of inbetween the air box and the turbo and crank case breather off and there was a little puddle on oil in the bottom. The crank case breather has been replaced but still smoke under load.

Advice needed please, are my piston rings on the way out?

Thank you

Does it not have a DPF? A 2006 should have, which way does the tail pipe point, straight out or down?

It have either had the DPF gutted or there is a serious problem. The M47/57 engine should use next to no oil, so would suspect a turbo issue, the oil in the turbo snorkel is normal. Unlikely to be piston rings unless it has been badly looked after, modern engines with modern oils just don't wear out

check these

Especially on an m47 engine which is rather a robust engine.. in my experience i would firstly check for any back pressure coming from the engine, simply by removing the oil cap whilst running and check the suction you get back from it, it should be fairly easy to take off with little suction. if it requires any amount of force then i would firstly change the crankcase breather filter on the top of the rocker cover to a paper type filter from bmw, not these cheapy vortex filters which are complete shite.

also what grade oil are you using? very thin oil can burn quick. generally high mileage diesel bmws should really be run on 5w 40 fully synthetic c3.

worst case scenario and get a diagnostic check on it, if it comes up with fault code 3ff0 it will require a full decoke of the cylinder head meaning your valve stem seals have gone hard and are letting oil through the seals into the combustion chamber thus burning oil.

if from what your saying that your getting no leaks and if the smoke coming from the car is blue, also the mileage, most likely it will need that decoke.

hope this is helpful for you as my first post on this forum.

my experience comes from working for a bmw specialist for 7 years and now i am a newly employed technician for bmw.

Thank you very much for your replies.

My 320d has the downward exhaust so no DPF, its had more than regular oil changes as i've been paranoid about the turbo blowing again. I do always try and put BP Ultimate diesel in as well and stay clear of the cheap supermarket stuff.

Is a de coke and valve stems seals a big job?

Great advice for your first post keep them coming!
