Performance panel filter is as far as I would go, no noticeable improvement on mine tbh, but more air = more power (no matter how small, it all helps!)

 

For sound yet.. ! they come with a nice heat shield so the intake temps are not to bad.. But the O.E are box is better with a filter in it..

But if you want more or a deeper note go for it.. !

That's interesting, as over the years at different dyno days I have seen removal of the airbox filter completely (done purely for curiosity) equaling more power, 3-5bhp extra on some V6 and C20LET Vauxhalls. The only extra thing entering the engine is increased air, so common sense tells me that a panel filter that increases air flow is better than a restrictive oem one.

Cone/Induction kits from what I have seen on dyno days are another story altogether..Waste of time.

 

i'm not sure what make it is as my e36 came with it already fitted, but i'm more than happy with the sound of it. From experience with my other car, i've never believed the hype about cone filters & the engine bay heat losing power either. My fastest 1/4mile time was done with a open/non-shielded cone filter, & that was after sitting in the fire-up lane so the temps would of been higher

I was at a rolling road tester few weeks ago he was laughing saying he gets people in all the time with these carbon induction kits costing £250 etc they make no extra power and most the time make less than stock part

 

OEM bmw paper filter £7.99p made by MAHLE does me fine i might try a foam pipercross or k&n panel filter in future their about £35 you aint really gonna see a difference unless its already well clogged up with dirt

 

Yeah I've got a Pipercross panel filter, as you say no difference really, maybe slightly sharper response, but that's probably just in my mind!

 

Yeah the pipercross ones are big with all the turbo lads at work some use them on their bikes and say their much noticeably louder on bikes than cars

 

The e36 standard air box with a standard air filter is good for 230bhp if the car has a m50 intake manifold fitted after this it's worth then fitting a cold air induction kit like a Simota
