Hi all

I have an X2 2019 with the same fault as Johnnyroper my car is 3years and 5 months old with 26k on the clock bmw have give me the same response as to what Johnnyroper got ,I am looking online for any help .
Roger, If you are still a BMW owner after your experience I would love to know how you sorted your problem gearbox?
Many more cases are now being reported with similar stories as yours (and mine)!!

2018 X2 2.0d with the Aisin 8sp at 27 thousand miles i was getting similar symptoms to the OP, BMW say sealed for life but Aisin say ATF change every 30 thousand, mine would change down harshly and bang into reverse, up shifts were fine though, a pressure flush is not recommended because of the risk of dislodging one or more of the many seals, so 3 flushes seem to be the norm, another issue was trying to get the spec for the ATF as Aisin call it a World ATF or similar, but it's very expensive to buy in one litre containers, i finally found that MANNOL 20L GM DEXRON VI 6 is the right spec, [BMW says its ATF 7 which does not exist] as shown i bought 20l and did 5 flushes which left the ATF in the box spotless, the old ATF was black and so bad i thought i had opened the wrong drain plug ! and i must admit i was very worried at the colour, anyway after following the correct procedures for temp and level etc i found my gearbox transformed, i am lucky enough to have to good diagnostic equipment and performed a gearbox learning reset, now the gear changes are barely perceptible up or down gear changes and reverse is so smooth i only know its engaged because the reverse camera comes, all in it took maybe an hour and half so well worth it, the only things replaced were the 2 o rings from the level plug and drain plug, there are no filters in these gearbox's. hopefully this will be of some help to someone........B

Hi, very interested in your experience with your ATF changes. What is the 'gearbox learning' you refer to?
In your storyline you say that Aisin recommend one should change ATF every 30k miles. Where do you get this info?
What seems clear from other experiences is that BMW change to Aisin and the transverse set-up, that I am hearing is the same in the BMW Mini, is failing in an increasingly large number of cases.
I love my car as I have many BMW's before this. I'd like to fix the thing satisfactorily rather than get rid!! BMW's attitude to what is clearly a problem is poor in the extreme. The question is how to get them to fess up and take responsibility.
Any ideas anyone out there?

I do see what you are saying and imagine that you are either a 'Specialist' or your best mate is one? I envy you!
With hindsight It may be that I should have got on this forum earlier following my disastrous phone call from my local dealer. They could not have cared less about my predicament or at least didn't after they realised I was not dumb or flush enough to shell out over £11k for them to 'replace' my gearbox. Having listened to your very useful advice I might well have tried a flush or two just to see what happened rather than put the job in the hands of a specialist to do God knows what!!

Yes, people who have had such an expense on a relatively low mileage BM are going to be moaners and very angry! Less so if BMW made a decent offer to remedy the problem of say half the cost. I don't think they can do that because the problem is bigger than you think. Ste42 above has a gd point.

Your point about 'serviced correctly' is obvious but very well made but if the BMW service schedule doesn't require any attention until 100k miles new owners will be unaware of the need to check, replace ATF after a lesser mileage.

to be fair, your specialist probably would have suggested flush if they thought it would work [ if they are honest ], BMW dont realy care because the amount of serious issues is small in the grand scheme of things and angry customers are just classed as acceptable losses, no different than other big buisness, doesn't do you any good though sadly. IMO BMW are amongst the small amount of excellent makes and if treated correctly from new they would prove that IE a gearbox run in service at around 1000 MILES/KM's, but they dont as they pander to the fleet buyers, usualy by the time issues arise the vehicle has passed to the next owner with either no warranty or a non BMW aftermarket warranty both of which works to the benefit of BMW, all the manufacturers work like this to a greater or lesser extent, it's just the Motor trade where the end user comes last and always will, it really means all new owners new or second hand need to be "on the ball" when it comes to their vehicles, but that would mean education so that will never happen 😉 i dont like gossip about vehicle faults though as they cause more Red Herrings than anything as major faults usualy are a tiny minority, i remember when Ford first started using single point fuel injection across their range, the public were used to Carburettors and pumping throttle pedals and as a result the new cars were flooding right left and center even though starting instructions stated dont touch the throttle while cranking, the gossip started and Ford were slagged off as never starting in the cold or wet, but the reality at the time was for every ford that didnt start 2000 always did...the negative news won as it always does, People [me included ] love to rant and rave and blame anyone and anything, it's just human nature, life is frustrating and cars realy realy dont help, we could all buy horses, but then some of us would end up being kicked in the nuts and the seller would get the blame for selling a dodgy horse:(
I'm laughing about being 'kicked in the nuts'. Thanks for the reply
