Hi everyone,
I am in need of some advice regarding improving the handling of my 335D. I took the car out this morning for an enthusiastic run on some roads that I had regularly used on the bike and in the Boxster. Now I wasn't expecting the bmw to handle anywhere near like the Porsche, but I was expecting a decent level of grip and confidence through corners.
At this stage, I feel the 335D is a one trick pony. Traffic light grand prix hero and apart from that it is a relatively dull and lifeless saloon. I've had a feel the car was handling like a sunken ship but I reserved my opinion until I pushed the car a little. If this is the "diesel M3" then I never want to drive an M3.

There seems to be an endless amount of trash on the internet regarding suspension setups. I'm looking for an overall improvement in handling without sacrificing the ability to get over speed bumps. I'd like an improvement in both front and rear end feel. The current setup does not inspire confidence and unless you are happy with straight line flat out, brake hard, slow as an infants sprint through the bend, touch the throttle at your peril, then flat out as soon as a straight comes, I really cannot see how BMW has managed to **** this up so much.

Do you think Mr BMW has actually driven one?

I hear a lot of people going for the coilover sets for the BMWs to improve handling. KW, BC racing, Bilstein.

I had the BC racing br coilovers on my previous cars with a fast road set up. They were very good but the the ride was harsh, doesn’t help when I had low profile tyres on as well and being a daily. But you can adjust the height and the damper settings and the handling improved drastically, thrashing round corners confidently on the back roads

Yes I know what you mean, this put me off buying one. Loads of options out there & depends on how far you want to go. A friend of mine has a 2018 F31 and was complaining about the same thing, didn’t want to compromise on the ride too much so just changed the springs, think it was around £450 -£500 fitted inc geometry set up. It’s no M3 but made a massive difference in handling without compromising on ride comfort or insurance issues

Might not be a 335d but I went from an sDrive 320d to an xDrive 320d and the latter handles like a dog, liked to understeer out of corners and tended to wallow all over the road where as my first 320d was brilliant (on passive M-Sport suspension)
Safe to say I only kept the xDrive car a year till I moved onto my G20 and what a difference it makes going back to a car that handles well!

Ok folks.... so wow!!!!

The car is an absolute weapon! I have owned some exceptionally track focused cars and i cannot believe how different this car now feels.

here's my review of the garage I used...

Excellent service from both gents at TRD. Transformed my BMW into an absolute weapon and it uses the 400hp much more suitably. The grip through corners is such a change from the x-drive standard system. Controllable power sliding out of corners. Gave me some advice over the phone regarding changing components. I was advised to change anti roll bars and springs to keep the family car comfort, I was hesitant and even considered a full coilover setup. I went with TRD's advice and changed the springs and ARB's. I cannot emphasise how different the car now feels. The car no longer lurches under acceleration and braking stability is much improved. The nose diving under harsh braking has all but been cured. The instant feel of turn in makes the car such a pleasure to drive. It has gone from a boring but fast family saloon to an absolute road weapon. I picked the car up an hour and a half ago and I have yet to have enjoyed my regular trip back home as I did today. I even went off piste to some twisties, much to the annoyance of my good lady and the fact my dinner was ready. Trustworthy, reliable, good fun and happy to chat about cars. Some excellent pieces of equipment at the garage when I was there today. As Ernie said, I'll be back. :)

Glad to hear you’re happy with the results 👍🏻 Just a shame it doesn’t come from the factory that way

birds BMW is the best place for a proper suspension set up they will give you a set of springs and dampers developed for the chassis F30 give them a call
