My 325 i e92 came up with the bright red warning sign (Electric steering wheel lock faulty) and i was surprised that the local BMW dealer advised that this was a known issue and wasn't dangerous so just keep driving until the next service. Does anyone have similar experience or should i take the warning sign more seriously. Next service isn't due for several months

If the car is parked with wheel load on the locked steering system, just like old school key cars do some times, the electrical release can not do its job releasing due to strain on the lock and an error can ocur. Nothing wrong with the car in this scenario.

Bad battery may cause the error (lot power used when unlocking) and old software in the car. Soft from 2009 and younger has fixed it.
This feature has a fault counter. When the counter goes above set value the warning is shown on the cluster. You can reset the counter with diagnostics like DIS. The software update (or newer vehicle) has the fault counter with raised value so the warning doesn't come on that easily.
