So, 2020 M340i. failed parking sensors. Came up with 'parking sensor dirty'. BMW quoted in excess of £500 for diagnostic, new sensor and the replacement. I felt the sensors one by one and could feel one slightly less obviously clicking than the pthers. Ordered a colour coded one from Ebay for £39. 1 hour later and all fixed. Easy peasy. This is the 2nd one. Seems that a small stone chip caused it in each cae. So i decided to sand down the old ones and try them. Sanded them enough that they were smooth to the touch. Both then worked when plugged in. Just shows you how much we pay for what can be a very simple DIY fix. I will now have 2 spares once i re paint them Portimao blue.

Hi looking for some help, similar situation. In January I took delivery of my new X3 2024 reg from my local dealer. About a month ago started getting warning messages the sensors not working due to dirt washed the car, obviously didn’t fix it. Contacted the dealer, a month later the car was taken in. After running a diagnostic it came back the issue was due to stone damage on the Right and Left front sensors. I was advised by the dealer to contact BMW their response today was:-

“I've received an update from BMW XXXX they've advised the sensor has been damaged by stones - as this isn't a manufacturing defect t it won't be covered under the manufacturer warranty” They also wanted the Dealer to pay for the repair who declined of course.

My contention is the sensors shouldn’t fail after 6 months of normal road use. I’ve had BMWs for 20 years never in that time have I had this issue. As this is a new car surely this shouldn’t fail therefore not fit for purpose so it’s a design fault? I’ve been told by BMW there isn’t any right to appeal this decision.

Has anyone else had this issue, how did they resolve it, is there any appeal process?

BTW the Dealer couldn’t have been nicer. I had a free loan car for two days.
Thanks

Niall

If it was me before replacing sensors I would sand the pain off and try them again. The stone chips in paint could be affecting the signal.

got to say if it is from stone chips then BMW are within their rights not to pay as it is a damage issue rather than a defect that warranty would sort. Whether it’s a design fault or just pure bad luck I don’t know
