E90 Manual boot release ...?

Have a 2011 318d M Sport - been a great, fun little car... not my main vehicle any more but I dont want to scrap it.

Anyway - have a few issues with the car that need sorted maybe some that make it non-viable (financially) to repair... but I wont know as I cant get it round to my mechanic. As it has sat, not being used, with - it seems - a weak battery anyway the battery wouldn't start it....

So after a veritable battle to remove the bugger from the boot, I had it on trickle-charge in my hall (live in an upstairs maisonette with limited parking - charging it in situ outside wasn't an option).
Now I didn't think this would be an issue - but some others that have done this may already know what is coming next....

I cant get back into the boot to replace the battery - there doesnt seem to be any readily apparent manual means of opening the boot.

Or have i missed something obvious and I need to go and sit on the dumbass step... ? The manual/handbook is, of course, in the sodding boot....

is the rest of the car open ?

Yeah, the main cabin is fine.....

Boot locked itself when the lid was closed.. the button on the dash/or the keyfob wont work due to lack of power/electrics.

I believe, up til 2008 models, there was a hidden keyhole on upper edge of the rear number plate, but this was discontinued into 2009 and is not on my model. I cant believe there isn't a straight forward, manual way to open the boot... 🤔

open the bonnet and connect the battery to the charging pegs with a pair of jump leads and open with the key fob

Thanks - but tried that..... indeed it seems sound, used the posts under bonnet for jump leads. If there was a battery, albeit low power or even dead, in the boot all wired up, it may work - but as it is it seems there is a massive battery shaped hole in the power circuit as a whole (just dangling leads left in that boot cavity, which I cant get to)

Basically, it didn't supply any power to the car that way at all...

Thanks...

Yeah, I think I saw part of that on a thread on an E90 forum earlier, but got lost reading through the rest of the post (to be honest I probably just shuddered when I got to Wiring Diagrams ;-) ) Was hopeful of less involved options.... but maybe not.

I may dabble with this in next few days..... or pass it to mechanic.

Either way it shouldnt be this hard to get into a boot without electrics.... FFS BMW had a system in place before, then decided to scrap it and only leave manual entry for the driver's door.

When you connected the jump cables under the bonnet you should have had power.
If nothing happened then it could have been a bad connection on the earth/black cable.
Try it again and clip the earth to the engine if you can and the red to the red jump point.
Have had a couple of days away from messing with it and had other stuff on..... will give it a another whirl tomorrow.

I am still amazed that this length messing around is necessary - why they don't have a sensible manual release system is beyond me....

After a few days away from messing with, thinking about it.... have secured the nose on parking spot from the car in question and will try using the jump/boost posts under the bonnet but this time using my main car as the charge supplier instead of a booster/jump pack.

EDIT: have had my Audi hooked up to it to supply power and still no joy. So either break in jumper cables (unlikely, they were new and unused) - the fact the BMW battery is completely missing makes this method void. Surely there is a manual mechanism - something that doesn't involve breaking into boot via seats, or splicing into wiring loom

I have only just logged back into this Forum after a long time away - sat with three different Beemers to the one in question in this thread... apologies for the late response.

As to that one, I had an auto locksmith come around and short the wiring (or other some such arcane magic) - and I then sold the car to Romanian chap I believe. I still think it is poor foresight on the part of BMW that there isnt a fail safe, manual work around for that issue.
