E36 engine number ???

Alright guys can some one please tell me where the engine number should be ??

Any help much appreiciated need to know if my engine 2.8 or 2.5

I know that sounds crazy lol I brought a 2.8 some time ago and ibam breaking it. But some one seems to think it's a 2.5 ;-)

The serial number is somewhere on the side of the block, on the intake side of the motor, close to the gearbox, iirc. But the easiest thing to do is to take a look and see if it's got an aluminium block, or iron. 2.5's never had aluminium blocks. Or you can post some pics of the engine and I'm sure people here will be able to tell you what engine it is. :thumbsup

Isn't the oil cap in different locations? One at the front, one at the back iirc. Can't remember which way around though.

I think M50 lumps have the cap towards the back and M52's have it located up front:thumbsup
