BMW 525d engine tapping noise - YouTube
Hi All,
This is a tricky one, here's the history...
Engine had a slight misfire on startup. Injectors were sent away, tested, refitted and misfire cured but now had tapping noise. Car taken to another garage who removed and inspected cams and fitted new tappets. Still no joy so sump off, big end shells removed and inspected. Again no fault found. The noise seemed to be loudest around number 4 injector so it was swapped for number 1 but the tapping still remained loudest around number 4. There are no faults in ECU and smooth running values are all spot on. The car drives well and pulls strongly and smoothly. If anything the tapping is slightly quieter when cold and is most noticable when accelerating from standstill. When cruising along the motorway at 70 it is barely noticable. The noise doesn't seem light enough to be a tappet or deep enough to be a big end. I'm wondering if it could still be an injector fault and am toying with buying a new injector and trying it in each of the six cylinders.
Car is a 2007 525D with the M57TU engine with 80k on with full service history.
Does anyone have any suggestins what I can do to at least narrow down the source of the noise? BMW Main Stealers are no use as all they are interested in is selling me a new engine.
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
