Hi All.

I have an F10 - 520d M sport Saloon (66 Reg).

Can you perform a brake fluid service without, removing the wheels or loosening the wheels / wheelnuts?

If you can how?

How does BMW dealership carry out the service ?

BMW Dealership did Brake Fluid Service last Thurday.
The wheel nearly came off the car, 3 of the wheel nuts were missing on the rear passenger side wheel.

BMW gave an inspection report and said its almost 'Brand New' condition. They said they didnt touch the wheels but only visual inspection in the Brake Fluid service.
What's your opinion guys?

The 19" Alloys are completely damaged and require replacement.

I brought the Car in August last year from Evans halshaw and brought their 3 Year warantee. they are saying it's not their fault, as how can a car run and not have an accident in 7 months of use if the wheels nuts were missing from purchase. Both of the companies not accepting any liabilities :(

Are there any legal advice ? thanks

Thank your lucky stars you are still alive and havent caused any accidents through possible garage negligence.

From personal experience(gorilla mechanic stripped ball joint to hub carrier bolts with air wrench causing wheel to collapse into bulkhead and near loss of my life when travelling some moments before on motorway at 70 mph ).
Despite detailed photographic evidence trading standards failed to prosecute.
I took out a county court claim and achieved justice.
The offending garage burnt down some time later, Karma served.
I wish you well in trying to prove responsibility for this error.

As said above even if they didn’t remove the wheels which I find doubtful then they should have noticed bolts were missing. If there has been no intervention since purchase where bolts could have been left loose then it can only be them who had them off and left loose.
I’m the first instance wrote a letter to the dealer principle,if no joy file a claim online with the small claims court. Keep records of all contact and invoices etc. also make sure the brake fluid service invoice is correctly dated and has mileage documented and that you have documented proof of mileage when failure occurred so it’s clear very little distance has been travelled since they did the work

Thank you. It was very obvious they are trying to cover up. Because the manager and person that worked on my car is not at work. Both on anual leave. It raises the doubt. When I phoned them, they said were trying to get rid of me by give me an email address and saying manager not in.

Im not happy at all. Because the car was completely perfect before dealership and BMW didnt give any recommendations and did say only very minimal wear almost as good as new. Idiot me went away trusting they done their job properly .

If anyone still has a copy of the TIS service procedures for doing the brake fluid you can confirm whether the documented procedure from BMW specifies removing the wheels. If it does then you have the garage by the nuts (excuse the pun). If they didn't remove the wheels then they were not following procedure.

That aside, if they were halfway competent and the nuts were already missing and it wasn't spotted then they have been negligent anyway.

actually ive just had a flashback,,and my wheels on my e90 stayed on,local indy, not bmw specialist..used a pressure bleeder,i remember as they couldn't get one of the nipples off,so was like nearly a full brake fluid change.all other changes ive had has been wheels off,old fashioned way ie pump pedal etc

Traditionally wheels are always removed when bleeding brakes.
I have always personally removed wheels when bleeding brakes.
I have never had access to a full car lift to do otherwise.
There is however a caveat in that if the bleed nipples have sufficient clearance to the wheel rim then if car is up on ramp it would be very easy to connect the bleed tube without wheel coming off.
The conclusion is therefore each car dependent i.e size of wheels, diameter of brake disks and calipers.
They may use this reasoning as a get out of any liability.
