Hi,
Im thinking getting a used BMW 4 series gran couple (would be buying in cash), wanted to move away from the vag cars as i want something different. Dont know where to start in terms of getting the most reliable engine variant?

Been looking at the 430d vs 435d in xdrive. Also over to petrol at the 430i options ideally if i can get a 17 plate onwards.
Whats the reliability/upkeep like on these cars? Any recommendations?

not good mpg in the diesels unless you do long trips, have you considered the 440i,b58 engine, what a peach, ive had both the derv engines in 640d and f31 330d x drive,my rwd 640d had better mpg than the x drive, also the x drive is crap in the snow, better than rwd all day but not great.if traffic light derby is your thing the x drive is great for that.also the n57 in the derv is prone to more trouble than the previous m57 engine, just this week the indy i use has another 2 bottom end failures in ie crank.bearings etc,and remeber if gearbox, and or trans case in the x drive aint been serviced. then factor ÂŁ600-ÂŁ700 in for that.

Thanks for your reply!

What do you think of the 430i engine as opposed to the 440i version? Would that be just as reliable?

Also over to the x drive system, as this car is going to be a family car, would snow/winter tyres on rwd petrol versions perform well.
Dont do much miles on a weekly basis at most 50-60miles.

I've had a 420d and a 430d (still have this one), both great cars, never had anything other than recalls done to them. I had them serviced at 9k miles, both are over 120k miles and still run great.

Both cars are xDrive and drove nice, no good in the snow without winter tyres though. A RWD on winter tyres is better than an xDrive on summer tyres. And on that note, I have a set of original BMW wheels, tyres and TPMS for sale that will fit F32 and F36, they are in the classifieds on this forum and also on Pistonheads.

440i is twin turbo straight 6,,the 430i is 2.0l 4 cylinder straight 4 etc,id go 6 pot over 4 pot all day every day,and if your only doing 60 miles per week forget the diesel ,regens will be your biggest factor, also the b58 engine in the 440i is obne of the best bmw have ever built, and tuning capabilities are great if you ever fancied more power, also other variants like 435i vert etc.

the newer g series m440i convertable i like very much, and prices are getting near where id consider one in 3 years time ÂŁ35k pricewise now,379 bhp but they are a mild hybrid, interiors look nice and the equipment as standard are great .

Appreciate your reply!

Would probably go for the 440i or 430i, and get winter tyres as it would be a family car. Its gonna be a used purchase so got a tighter budget. Ideally will be looking for 17 plate plus, due to the tech.

All the variants of the 4 series are good, very good even, with a better standard of basic equipment than the equivalent 3 series.
There is absolutely no comparison between the 4-cylinder models and the 6-cylinder models - either petrol or diesel. Yes, the 6-cylinder engines burn a bit more fuel - but the refinement, smoothness, sound and so on is in another world from any rough-sounding, vibratory four banger. My M440i will give me exactly 43mpg on a run from Salisbury to York, keeping to all the speed limits and about 33mpg overall. The 6-cylinder diesels are magnificent, smooth and melodious and give around 40 mpg overall. The 435d isn’t worth the complexity over the 430d (2 independent turbochargers) as the 430d as well has a phenomenal torque output. Contrary to what has already been said here, the B58 petrol 3-litre engine is not a twin turbo - it’s actually a twin scroll single turbocharger, which makes it altogether better and more reliable than its predecessor, the N54 with its twin turbos.
Contrary to what has been said here it’s always worth opting for x-drive over rwd; there really isn’t any worthwhile difference in fuel consumption and they are much more sure-footed in all conditions.
The downsides to the 440i? None, really although I should personally prefer a much softer ride than the hard springs and dampers of the M-sport give. Also much higher profile tyres on smaller diameter rims would help. You won’t be disappointed, especially if you buy it from, and keep it maintained by a main concession.

oh yes there is,mpg is quite different,id say 10 mpg in same engine but rwd to 4wd,and i always say twin turbo on a car if it says twin, either scroll or not,but thats just me,and id rather have a rwd car all day over 4wd/x drive, way more driving pleasure to me,
