Almost six weeks since my 2007 E70 X5 started to conk out and eventually would not restart.
First garage replaced the throttle body/actuator which it was not.
Second, supposedly more specialised outfit have so far, and very much at my expense, tested the ECU for injector drives, replaced all six injectors, boost pressure sensor and are now sending the ECU off again for testing the boost pressure signal. If it is the sensor that is now at fault the final repair bill will be nudging ÂŁ3,000.00. If it isn't the sensor and the ECU is okay, then I don't know what else it can be.
Its seems to me that my car's woes have been used as a training vehicle for upgrading technicians skills. Trial and error in extremis! Every time something is replaced it seems another fault code comes up. If it is not resolved by probably rebuilding the ECU, I will have to take it away with no boost. ÂŁ3k for a barely drivable car!
I will update if and when it is resolved.

Check for carbon build up in the intake manifold and update us.
Disconnect EGR vacuum line and plug the line off with a screw and see if it drives better.
Disconnect the Mass Airflow Sensor and drive to see if it drives better.
On mine once I took off the EGR vacuum line it drove perfect and I got my boost back
Thanks Scellpt. I wish I'd posted a bit earlier and I would have done as you suggested rather than have them send the ECU away for more testing. If the ECU testers are honourable and true, they will test it and find it faultless and only charge me ÂŁ45. The worry is that they may be feathering their own nest and charge ÂŁ350.00 plus VAT to repair it, regardless of condition.
I've sent off your suggestions for the garage to try first.
Will update in due course.

Update - finally got it back. Another ÂŁ350 to have the ECU repaired - a ceramic component in the ECU had failed apparently. Partner drove it away and immediately the suspension level control warning came on the dash. Nearside rear corner sagging pitifully.. She took it back and they said it was fine when they test drove it. Cleared the light but it came straight back. Then the runflat there warning light came on restricting speed to 50mph. Then no PDC alerts would be visible or audible. Biggest worry was no compressor noise on entry and the sagging rear.
Cut a long story short, I wasn't prepared to leave it with them any longer, especially 110 miles away, so I drove it back with a lopsided loping action, trying to avoid potholes which is no mean feat even on motorways. At home I scanned it with Foxwell and cleared a few spurious faults - also cleared each rear suspension faults and blew up the suspension through the gadget.(Disappointed that the garage didn't offer to do this, had I known it was possible at the time, I'd havre suggested it)
I'll take it out tomorrow and see what transpires, but I find it hard to stomach that all this stemmed supposedly from water ingress into the engine compartment from the knackered bulkhead seal. Why did it affect the ECU so dramatically and lead to all these additional faults?
Back soon.
