No idea what potentials on that engine, all I can advise is you speak to Jason at BW chiptune in Hayes. He knows bmw and will do a proper job.

How did you get on?
I have a 2021 320i and it was near impossible to get it remapped. I went for a Bluespark tuning box in the end & very pleased with it so far.

 

Spoke to that Jason lad recommended by Johnnyroper and he said:


“After around 6/20 the ecu is locked
So best buy before
I normally see around 265-275bhp with 330ft of torque”

I’m guessing since yours is 21 you had no luck

Be very, very careful remapping a 320i.

The 320i has the same basic engine as the 330i BUT it has a much higher compression ratio, 11:1 as opposed to @10.2:1. You start adding much more fuel and turbo boost and it will go bang.

A mate works at a big Sytner emporium and they see quite a few that have blown up, and when a piston disintegrates it makes quite a mess. BMW will be able to detect a remap, no matter how clever the remapper thinks he is. The car is then black marked for any future warranty or good will from BMW.

If you want to go faster, just buy a 330i.

Yeah I know you are right about the engine, but the 330i (apparently) can be remapped upto over from 254 to over 300hp - as it's the same engine as the M135i I think. As I wrote at the top of the thread, I was looking out for a 330i, but this came up & was too good to refuse. I had my 320d mapped from 163 to 225hp back in 2016. Loads of people told me it would blow up - it didn't, I sold it in April this year 150,000 miles later (193,000 total) running like a dream. I think it depends how you treat it - if I try to do Neurebergring laps with pedal to the metal, or burnouts on Tik-Tok, yeah it's going to go bang. If I use the extra power just to make the drive more relaxed, it should be fine.
And it's not remapped - it's a tuning box that can be removed in a few minutes.

 

A 320d, as a diesel, has pistons designed for a compression ratio of around 20:1.

The B48 in the 330i has a lower compression ratio for a reason, so it can handle the extra boost and fuelling.

But - it's your car!

 

Personally I would say 0.8 CR difference isn't a big deal. If you are using 99RON fuel like you should be, that's more of a difference than running 95RON on 10.2:1 CR.

 

Well, BMW have different compression ratios for a reason, but, hey!

 

Mostly do do with who makes pistons that are close enough to the cr they are looking looking for 😉

Nothing Nothing wrong with taking something na that runs around 11:1 and chucking 10psi of boost at it😎
