Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum (despite of being reading it for almost a month everyday in search for answers) and i have a few things i would like to have an opinion.

I bought a 320i 2L 170BHP N43 2008 with 88900 miles. The day i bought i went to see the car which was advertised on autotrader, was a private seller. He picked me up and took me to a near car park. I couldn't hear any noises or lights on the dashboard.

After i inspected the car i told him to be honest and to tell me if there was any problem so i could try to fix or have it fixed. He told me sometimes the oil light would come up on the dashboard and that he took to the mechanic and they said it was a sensor. So i thought it could be the Oil Level sensor.
All this time while we were talking i kept the engine on idle and it didn't sound rough. But the car seem it had been stopped for a while.
We made the deal, i paid by bank transfer and i drove off.
- After 30min of driving the Low Level Oil Light came on and i could smell oil inside the car...so i thought it could be the sensor..later i made a few small trips inside london and i decided to put some oil from Halfords..and this cure the problem.
-At night the Low Oil Pressure red light and Yellow Battery light came on and the car seem to work rough with only 3 cylinders. I stopped the car and i parked it until next monday. Sunday i connected a basic diagnostic tool obd and got Error on Thermostast and Misfire on Cylinder 3.
  • Went to a garage monday and they said it could be £800 to check the Oil problem but they were fully booked.
  • I then drove to MrClutch nearby and they changed the oil, filter and spark plugs. The guy showed me that the plugs were completely black and that the car had 16 errors, 7 on the engine. (Then it's on this moment you know you got really f***D)
  • I bought a K+DCAN cable and installed ISTA+ and INPA. I tested the injectors and other parts and bits and got the following and also the solutions i found:
2EF5 - Thermostat
2F11 – Radiator Blind Top
30EA – DeNox Catalytic Converter, Sulphurized
2E19 – Ignition Cylinder 2
29CF – Misfirings Cylinder 3
29CE – Misfirings Cylinder 2
2AAF – Fuel Pump Plausibility
29CC – Misfirings Several Cylinders
3104 –
30C1 – Engine-Oil Pressure Control, Static
5E19 – Limp Mode
A559 – Battery Drain
2AF2 - Nitrogen-oxide Sensor, lambda linear
2AF4 - Nitrogen-oxide Sensor, electric
2AF6 - Nitrogen-oxide Sensor, lambda binary
A6CF - AUC Sensor
A6DE - Mirror/Spray Nozzle Heating
-There's clicking noise (metal on metal), might be the Tensioner? I compared the old with new tensioner and the old seems with a bit less pressure.
Inspected the timing chain and there's no scratches or abuse, also i can't see any broken timing chain guides.
- Smoke coming from the exhaust near the Cylinder Head Gasket maybe 2/3rd piston exit. (I didn't noticed any more oil smell after changing the Rock Cover Gasket)

The solutions i found are:

Needs New:

Thermostat
New Spark Plugs, NGK High Energy (Tested)
New Ignition Coils (Tested)
Cleaning the Injectors (Tested)
New Battery 90/95AH AGM
New Low Pressure Fuel Pump Sensor + Pipe (if it's BOSCH since it's a newer version)
Catalytic Converter - Needs Italian Tuning (HIghway for 30min at 110mph :D ) for detox
New NOX Sensor
Vanos Solenoids - Cleaned
Rocker Cover Gasket - Replaced (had oil leak)

MrClutch wanted approx. £2000 for a High Pressure Fuel Pump and 4 injectors when actually the misfires were caused by the ignition coils and spark plugs....!!!!!!!!!!...so...my faith in mechanics has drop dramatically!

Now at the moment i have the car stopped...i went online to fill a claim for Small Claims Court and paid £185. The seller doesn't care and doesn't reply to my messages (He knew the problem!). Can someone advice about this process? He has now until the 17th of February (3 weeks approx).

Also with the oil pressure and the noise...First would be to replace the Oil Pressure Sensor, Clean the Oil Hydraulic Valve, then move to the Oil Filter Gasket (there's a bit of leak..unsure if it's from when they changed the filter), check the oil filter cap, and lastly check the sump for broken chain guides.
I think it's very unlikely it can be the oil pump....but i would appreciate if someone can lead me in the "right" direction.

At the moment the errors are: Thermostat, Nox Sensor, AUC Sensor, Denox Catalytic Converter and Mirror/Spray Nozzle Heating.

Thank you all and apologies since i've seen some other posts related to the same subject and engine...i'm just including more stuff so if someone has the same problem.

Since the car has probably been left some while. The battery may need replacing. This can throw alot of codes.

The low oil pressure could be as simple as a oil filling cap seal or filters, in need of a good service etc. also what is this "noise" you mentioned? External oil leak like housing gasket shouldn't really cause low pressure, just maybe burning oil smells.

Also if they screwed up the oil filter service. This would definitely cause low pressure

So today I bought a AGM battery 95ah from eurocarparts.

After installing I reset and calibrate the steering and then registered the battery on ISTA-D with the option of (Register Battery Exchange) and then (Register Battery Capacity Higher/Lower).

I then cleared all errors and drove for a few minutes. The only errors now at the moment is the 30EA DeNox Catalytic Sulphurized and 2AAF which is the Low Pressure Fuel Pump Sensor.

I'll drive a bit more and see if the oil pressure warning comes up.

I read somewhere that the battery if it's flat or dead it can mess up and damage the sensors, misfires and other odd things.

Hi,

Today I was trying to remove the Oil Pressure Sensor and end up taking out the Temperature Sensor. (Pressure is located further below)

I've noticed some blue stuff around it which I don't know if someone put it there. (See image attached).

Also the car had misfire on Cylinder 3 and 2..I then changed the ignition coils around and got 2 only...I'm guessing it's related to the wiring that goes to the ignition coils. (Need to test further and also difficult to find it online for sale).

After driving for a few minutes, a few times around the block I got several errors on the Nox Sensor (maybe time for a new one).

I changed the oil filter and o-rings (Mann filter) and the oil pressure warning light didn't come up, I also removed the plug from the oil pressure sensor and put it back..maybe it did the trick but I'll drive more and for longer to check how it goes.

My timing tools arrived today (33£ on eBay), just waiting for the Felbi Timing Kit bought on buycarparts.com (86£).

Big DIY coming...

Today I was trying to change the Oil Pressure Sensor but mine has 3 point connector (so I had to order on ebay and the best way is to do it is:

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal
  • Remove the air box next to the radiator
  • Remove/push aside the air filter box
  • remove the serpentine belt (don't forget to mark the direction with a sharpie and a picture of how it is so you put it back the same way)
  • Remove the Alternator (3 Long screws plus one small screw on the alternator itself which holds the cables)
  • the top is a Oil Temperature Sensor
  • Below is the Oil Pressure Sensor
  • Under the pressure sensor on the left is the Hydraulic Oil Valve.

Best way is with a 24mm spanner or deep socket.

I haven't changed it since I'm waiting for the part and I need to put all back together and drive it for a while. If Low Oil Pressure Light comes on then I know I need to check the sump.

I also changed the Oil Filter Housing Gasket and Coolant Gasket.

Note: This sensor was for my 320i N43 E92 2008. The sensor sold by eurocarparts is just for 1 connection point.

i have the same car with 73k mileage and with nearly all same error codes, this is a set of chronic illnesses of n43engines and BMW

i started replacing NOx sensor with noxem (400euro part only)
then I replaced the timing chain you should first change the chain and go for other errors after this.

the worst was misfiring it is ok now.
the timing chain was 2cm longer then original one, this effects all sensor or others ,
do not touch ignition, injector, plug or any other sensor, after timing chain fixing some of them will not appear again be sure.

4th July 2020 UPDATE: I replaced the Thermostat (pain), used 7.2L of blue BMW coolant and bleed the system and error code went way.

Replaced the oil pressure sensor and the oil red light is gone.

Also changed:
Oil Filter Housing Gasket + Cooling Gasket
Rocker Cover Gasket + High Pressure Fuel Pump Gaskets
New Shell Helix Ultra EC3 BMW Oil BB-LL04
New Oil Filter

- Replaced the Nox Sensor but the one I bought from eBay is damaged (Lambda Linear, Electrical, Coast Mode Check, Bilinear) and it's giving me misfire on cylinder 2...Can a leaking injector cause the Nox sensor to fail?

- Replaced AUC Sensor and still get the error.

Any ideas?

Btw the chain is tight and no broken plastics (inspected the oil sump with a boroscope).

There's no noise or rattlings.

It's just really the Nox sensor which is damaged and replacing the injectors 2 and 3. Need to test further since it might be also the coil pack.

Tried to sell the car but with this problem it's difficult to find someone who would buy it to fix like this.
