STEERING FAILURE
My E92 330d manual fell madly in love with the concrete central reservation on a French motorway. Arrow straight road, raining, steep uphill section, outside lane. Speed about 75 as i'd just left the Spanish frontier.
This happened about 3pm on 3rd December, 2009.
No warning(or traction lights), it just pulled left. Due to the reservation profile, only the wheels made contact. The car was then thrown into the middle of the road, and after a momentry surge right, it then serenely veered left into the barrier for the second time. My car then tried to mate with the barrier for several seconds(God knows how long actually) before veering left, at which point i regained steering control and stopped on the hard shoulder.
Throughout, the steering was very heavy.
N/S/R wheel trashed, front not too bad. Tyres looked ok! So decided to crawl off motorway and made it to an adjcent hotel. When the recovery truck arrived i attempted to reverse the car. After only 1 metre it stopped, due to N/S/F being turned in and fouling bodywork. Driving forward straightened the wheel back up.
BMW recovery have been superb and sorted hire cars etc. The car will be back in the UK soon for examination.
I would appreciate any comments, advice etc. Being computer illiterate is currently giving me problems sending e mails, so a phone number would be handy to get back to any replies. My mobile is 07768 322757.
