Hi All,
Hoping that someone maybe able to shed some light on my E53 problem.
I noticed that my air con had suddenly stopped working.
Did some research and it seemed that the aux fan (the electric one that is nearest to the front bumper) is a good possibility.
I checked on my fan and sure enough it didn't move at all, which put it under suspicion.
I read that if you disconnect the electrical connector on the high pressure air con it will force the fan on.
When I did this it run ok at a very high speed.
Today I loaded INPA and had a chat with the car and no faults were logged with the air conditioning module at all.
I triggered an output to turn the aux fan on and nothing happens.
Does this point still to a dodgy fan?
Anything else I could check with INPA?
Many thanks

Hi mate, Iv got the same problem, number ten on my checklist to fix. Some one has posted this on You Tube, an American chap who says it stems from the little thermostat bottom left of the car ( with the engine in front of you), that sits up right on the elbow of the bottom hose for the rad, this is also connected to the black box that sits on top of the fan shroud think this is the aux fan relay. (Nathan's Garage is his tube name)
Hope this helps fix the prob.

Hi Mate,

Thanks for that will take a look.
Seems mine was just low on gas as I took it to an indy and it held the vacuum test ok so he regassed it and so far so good. I think there's possibly misleading info on the net about the aux fan, depending on what engine you have.

I've recently had a similar problem with heating and fan on my X5 3.0i 2003 E53. The symptoms were that the fan would stay on a constant yet very low level and intermittently work. I took it to the electricians who done a diagnosis and concluded it was the the heater motor resistor pack that controls air flow etc . It's cost me about ÂŁ165 to repair. The part cost ÂŁ72 labour ÂŁ60 and diagnosis ÂŁ35. Can anyone shed some light on this? Cheers

A garage will have a machine to do a regas.
R134a is the gas and you can buy a kit in halfrawds but it will cost you more than a regas and only top up the old gas.
With a regas it takes all the old stuff out and then puts the new back in with the correct amount of oil as well.
