Hi guys

I had been suffering from camshaft sensor error, low power in low gears. Garage said it was a timing issue (said it had skipped a notch) and "corrected it" and replaced the crank speed sensor. Error no longer happens. Power is back in low gears. he did say to fix the issue properly I need a new cam chain tensioner, new guides (the guide was worn he said) and new cam chain.

I have just replaced my cam chain tensioner myself, tbh there wasnt much slack in my chain anyway, and the existing tensioner was quite stiff so was working properly.

I opened the rocker cover to inspect the chain and guides. Chain looked ok however the guide was broken in two (as per my pictures). What a crap design by BMW (yet again).

Do I need to really replace this? Car drives well, has tiny top end tapping when I drive, and sometimes in low gears the car is very kangerooy (ie jumpy). Is it because of this broken guide? The chain seems to be solid and going where it should be.

Any help is appreciated. Any ideas of cost to pay someone to replace the tensioner also v helpful! thx

I think he is refereing to the tensioner (bolt thing) which he got from the dealers but the guide has now been discovered as broken... :thumbsup

The kangarooing malark mr end you reckon this could be caused by a hole somewhere in the exhaust system maybe before the lambda sensor could cause this as i think my exhaust it blowing and it kangaroos like a biatch when cold.....

Ah yes, the guide was new, but it's the original tensioner. Gotcha.

Holes in the exhaust? hmm, well it won't help, that's for one thing, most people don't realise (and i've even had people attempt to laugh at me for suggesting it) is that the exhaust will suck in air inbetween the pulses of exhaust gasses heading out.

It's not a pressurised system, it pumps in little bursts, and inbetween, the voids will suck air in, over the lambda, the ECU will see the free oxygen, compensate by adding more fuel, no effect, add more, still nothing, the oxygen is still there, and then flag an error.

If you hold a lighter flame just underneath the tip of the exhaust at idle, you'll see the flame flicks in and out of the tail pipe.

That said, it doesn't really cause kangarooing as much, generally
kangaroo=intake hose split

Foot down open the intake to the vacuum, air comes in via the easy leak, doesn't register on the MAF, the ecu doesn't put fuel in, and the car dies off.
As it dies off, the revs and vacuum drops, the vacuum can't open the split, and it runs fine and starts to pick up again.

Then, you've guessed it, the revs increase, the vac opens the split, engines dies off.
If it only happens in low gears, high acceleration, it's almost guaranteed to be the intake hose.

And as with a few other posters on here that i've noticed, now's about the time to admit to having a big hole wrapped in gaffa tape on the intake...

I see, well its going into the specialists tommrow to have the exhaust check anyway..

Engine lost all power when trying to set off in a rush yesterday too like a camshaft sensor fault so gonna get it plugged in and have a check too...

My intake pipes are fine.. do have tape holding the resonator box away from the pulleys though as the mounting thing broke off.. got some sticks like sh*t but it takes 24 hours to set and i cant not drive my car for 24 hours :hihi

sorry top clear up:

replaced the tensioner bolt with a new one from BMW. existing part seemed ok but I replaced it with the BMW one anyway.

The issue was with the guide (orange plastic as indicated in my images). This was broken in two however the top piece is held in place by a bolt and so doesnt move. I wanted to know if this was worth replacing - and would this be the cause of the kangerooing?

Re what he did to "correct" the timing - I have no idea...the explanation didnt really make sense to me. Still doesnt! He did replace the crank speed sensor tho.

Also - sorry to be an idiot - what and where is the intake hose?

BMW 318ti compact 2002 Chain guide broken

Hi Guys i took my car to a garege to be serviced, the car was driven to the garage and was working perfectly no problems what so ever, and no wornings no bad strts notting, so the garage drove my car in to there garage and started servicing my car. after they have finished servicing the car the garage phoned me up and said service done but car wont start. ok now as i was told that the Guide has broken and the cam is off timing plus it look like it jumped a tooth.. How is these posible to happen? the garage said it`s notting they did wrong and it`s a comone fault on these BMW engines.. Is that true? i had to tow my car to an other garage cos the guy that did the service said he cant do the job cos you need special tools to do it.. and the other garage that fixed it took them 3 weeks cos they had to test to see if valves where ok and other stuff, plus ortherd all the parts and end it up costing me ÂŁ1150 there was 16 hours laber that was the bige.. Can some one tell me is this posible that it just brock like that.. the car has only done 35,000 miles and never had any sins of problems.. i think it`s some thing the garaged did when servicing car.. i`m thinking of thaking this guy to court now as i feel i was shafted big time... please if any one has any information or coments i would appreciated...thank you....

Hi can any one tell me is it possible that a chain guide on a BMW 318ti se compact 2002 2.0 (E46) just done 35.000 miles break with no warnings. the car was booked for a service oil oil fillter etc.. and after car was serviced the car would not start the guy that did the service said it`s noting that he did, he said this is a common fault on these BMW engines and it happens..How is that possible the car never gave any sines of problems i drove car to the garage and the garage drove the car them self`s in to there garage. So can any one please tell if you have an experience is to if this is possible to just happen when car was working well. cos to repair it i had to take my car to an other garage and end it up costing me ÂŁ1300 and i`m thinking of taking the guy that did the service to court cos i feel he did some thing to cos this chain guide to snap. hope i`m not going on to much about this and you guys can help me out as you look more experienced and knowledge thanks
