I use Mobil 1 FSR in my E91 (6.5 litres) and Fusch ???? 10w40 in my E30 (4.5 litres)

Edit The information that I have suggests 1 litre of SAE 90W oil for rear differential and 6.5 litres of oil for manual gearbox but lots of different grades depending upon the label on the gearbox. No idea of volume for automatic box but again many different grades depending upon the label on the box...

 

nope has an open diff, and i used redline D4 atf for my transmission and diff. tranny seemed alot smoother after and im not just saying that, shame it got totalled a couple months later, i will be doing my new one with the same stuff again.

 

Redline D4ATF does NOT go in the diff which requires gear oil. D4ATF is a good choice for manual and auto trans and the P/S. Redline 75W90 goes in the diff.

 

I felt extremely paranoid about the oils :shifty: as i didn't know what to do for the best. My feelin is I'm going to be changing more often than BMW suggest so as long as its decent oil then I can't go that wrong.

Engine oil I'm going for Carlube Triple R 5w-30 fully synthetic £22.50/5L - meets all bmw specs apart from BMW LL-01 instead of BMW LL-04. Only thing I can find on this is low SAPS oil meets LL-04 and this is better for diesel engines for some filter Carlube do a low saps version for +£40 can't find any info to suggest better for petrol so???

Fuchs website says 1L for manual or 4L for Auto - I have a manual so Carlube MT94 £8.49 meets specs for BMW mini so can't be bad eh :hihi

Diff 1.2L Carlube 75W90 GL5 £4.59/L

All sorted and reasonably priced as will change often and all meet specs as far as I can see.

Its a funny subject oils, a different opinion everwhere you go. A lot of garages will use any ol shite in your engine, ie semi synthetic etc, even dealers. A lot of them say expensive oils are gimmicky, and I reckon there is an element of truth in that. But I also apply my own rule of thought: For any Turbo charged engine I have always used a fully Synthetic simply because a Turbod engine especially the petrols run the hottest and therefor the properties in the oil to keep it protecting are under the most stress (heat) so Fully Synth is required. Diesel engines on the other hand run colder and therefor less stress for the oil but maybe not so on Turbo Diesels?

Interesting that you are using ATF for a manual, i would of thought the ATF is a lot thinner? Is this common to use ATF in these gearboxes?

 

OEM fluid is basically ATF spec and manual g'boxes in many brands of cars worldwide have used ATF for decades. Redline tech will tell you D4ATF is the closest match to OWM spec. MTL is a little thicker and great for
warm(er) climes.
