so the check engine light came on on the way to work this morning, it is now getting a code read over at the garage, does anyone know what the usual suspects are for this and wether it would be electrical or mechanical?

Mine's doing it every day at the moment when cold so I carry a code reader and erase it myself. Could be absolutely anything that causes emissions to change. Mine is a multiple misfire with fuel cut off and I've put new coil packs and plugs on there. Also timing chain tensioner and guide after it slipped. Usual suspects if there was no misfire will be o2 sensors, MAF or coil packs. Also a vacuum leak due to a cracked or split pipe is a common problem. Please let us know.

cheers for that mate, so with it being just a check engine light and not the eml light it is likely to be either an emiisions problem or a sensor problem? It is over the road at the garage now so I will let you know when I get it back what the problem is :thumbsup

so the codes have came back:

87 - camshaft position sensor not plausible
78 - air-mass sensor open circuit/earth short
79 IAT sensor opencircuit/posotive short
AB - Fuel supply short to B+

So they cant be a fault with the camshaft sensor as it is brand new, he said ignore the 4th one as it does not matter, so what is the IAT sensor?

The garage cleared them and they all came back along with check engine light, he is an auto electrician but he said it could be something to do with the variable timing and it is due a service in around 500 miles so he said they may clear after a service, any ideas?

Interesting ... there are two cam sensors though... did you change them both? Assume you used OEM to replace and not a cheap after market one?
IAT is the Intake Air Temperature sensor which is probably linked to the MAF sensor also showing a fault. Maybe a loose wire on the MAF or the MAF may just need removing and cleaning. Best to try that before you buy a new one anyway.

Fail to see how a service would sort the problem I have to say.

Keep us posted buddy.

Only replaced the faulty can sensor after the diagnosis pointed to that one, the engine light is off now and has not come back on, I think it could be the maf if I am honest, it's in next week anyway to get a belt tensioner and water pump so I will give the garage the codes and get them to take a look

Hi mate .. did you get sorted? I finally fixed mine by unplugging the MAF ... hey presto, no engine light and all misfires gone. Apparently this won't always show a code if it's failing gradually! ... I've ordered a used Bosch one for ÂŁ30 to test before I spend ÂŁ180 on a new one. Relieved :thumbsup
