Hi all bought my 1st BM 2 weeks ago dealer said that he had his guy check all levels before i collected just checked oil and its about 2" above max mark on dip stick and very black will this have an adverse affect on general running of engine, also showing oil service 1 do you have to get this done by garage due to reset or is it an easy diy.

Over filling an engine with oil can be as bad as under filling it.........and may have various issues including Cat damage.

I would get the oil plus filter changed ASAP.............u could do this yourself and even reset the lignts yourself also---------its an easy DIY fix.

Did think this would be an issue just oil plus filter then ? from what i can see filter is near top of engine different to other cars i have owned can anybody give me a link on procedure on oil change and reset of lights also best oil that i should use.

Whilst is important to get this done asap (at the very least drain the excess oil from the sump) ... I'd contact the dealer and start some ranting and raving. If he refuses to 'sort it' as he should have done as he mentioned, take it to a garage, and try and recover the cost.

to drain the excess you can just undo the sump plug nut and just allow some of the oil to drain out. Probably worth you doing this yourself as 2" above the maximum mark on the dipstick is a seriously wrong.

We had a really old Nissan Micra come into us about 1 year ago, the bloke did his own service, but put roughly an extra 3ltrs of oil in, his car was just belching blue smoke out of the exhaust. It was also running abit bad, but not sure if that was directly down to the oil overfill or the car just being a neglected banger.

No!!!

Dont do it with the engine cold....

you always want the engine warmed up to temperature before dropping the oil out....
ir a large amount of cold, gunky old oil will stay in the engine (if its cold)

Ive done loads of oil changes and always with hot oil. it not thaaaat hot and just dont put your arm in the bucket!!!

if the oil is black I would 100% drop the whole lot out and replace with decent oil.
i recommend a trip to GSF and buy the following.

1 x 5 litre tubs of 10W40 oil (I forget what brand they sell but its good and cheap...ÂŁ13 a tub for the ones I bought the other day) - you may need 2 bottles as I cant recall the capacity of the car. M3 is 6 litres iirc but I doubt yours will be more than 5

Also buy a new sump plug and copper washer. And a new oil filter crucially.

Drop the oil out into a big bucket (tiling adhesive ones are good) or a massive deep tray...back the screw out slowly and put newspaper (lots) under the front of the car if you need to keep the area clean.
You wont burn your hand on the oil but wear gloves if your worried.

Then when thats taken care of, remove the oil filter using your a chain or strap wrench or socket if it has a bolt

Then fit the new plug and washer, pour some of your new oil into the oil filter (you dont need to fill it.half way will do) and also rub oil around the rubber seal at the top of the filter)

Then pour say 4 litres in using a funnel...wait a minute for it to settle, check the level.
etc until you get to the top line
