Right, this marring the enjoyment of driving my lovely car atm!
Either the manifold to the front pipe gasket is leaking, it's the manifold gasket leaking or I have a crack/split somewhere in this area.
I can't hear where it's leaking though! I've just ordered a manifold to front pipe gasket so hopefully it'll be this (easy to fit and cheeeap!! :D)
If it's not this my question is: Is it a difficult job to change the manifold gaskets? It looks a complete pig access wise!

Finally if there is a crack somewhere, does anyone know of a replacement manifold that isn't a million quid? I'd prefer not to go secondhand and bmw want lots of pennies for a new one....:eek

Gutted! :frown

Have you taken one off at all? Not alot of room as far as I can see?
Do you know if there's a particular point where they crack? Do you want to do for me whilst I watch and drink beer? All these questions, lol! :hihi

*Visions of snapped studs...* :frown

Yep. I have done one before..;)

Remove the washer bottle and the coil unit and there is more room than you would think. I would start wire brushing the nuts and studs and WD40 ing them now. Also order new nuts and studs from BMW....:thumbsup
The last one i did had a small split in no 4 branc where it welds to the flange. Hardest part is undoing the exhaust front pipe from the manifold flange..:frown

Could you try the old tissue paper trick of holding a small piece around the manifold and watching it to see where it's leaking from.
You'd have to hold the fan still though obviously lol

alrighty
ive been waiting for this to happen for a while to my 318iS
hence why ive kept the manifold from my old engine but seeing as its taking up room i could do with getting shot of it
however there are 2 things
firstly the manifold came off an m44 engine so i dont know if it will work with the m42 engine
secondly when i removed it one of the studs for connecting the manfold to the down pipe (cat section) snapped but its an easy fix
pm me if you are intrested :thumbsup

having a go at mine tommorrow already had it off once gaskets changed with no difference so now getting welded tommorrow. i just hope its easy to get the mani out :eek as for the ebay ss manifolds you have to modify them to fit past a part of the steering rack looks a bit of a pig but may be done. if i have to i will get one and try it. ill post up how i get on.

The main problem is the four 17mm nuts - the studs nearly always snap off. Forget new ones from BMW, they're around 20 quid a set and they weld in. The old ones need to be drilled out or grind the tops off.

A 1992 car will almost certainly have had alternative studs put in by now - ordinary 17mm nuts and bolts are fine.
There's no issue taking the manifold off the head. Some studs will come out, some won't.

I have just changed my M42 exhaust manifold to a second hand one for ÂŁ20. I have my old one out and am going to weld it if anyone is interested in it as a replacement. Ticking noise etc when driving is manifold crack. I done mine with everything in place just manouvered around coilpacks etc was fairly easy to come off and never snapped any bolts. No blows at all well chuffed. :)
