Good Afternoon,

Here is the message that I sent to BMW AG Germany but still awaiting a response. Any guidance is welcome:

I own a BMW E60 LCI 523iA with engine N52Nb25AE
The dealership swapped my failed ZF6HP21 (1071 030 021) with a ZF6HP21 (1071 030 020) that came from a different donor car (BMW E60 530i LCI).
Since, then the transmission suffers from heavy jolts, parking noise, delayed shifts, torque converter hum. I did 3 fuild/pan changes in 6 months in vain.
All the car modules have been updated in 2016 with the latest software (i-Level E060-16-11-500) except the swapped transmission TCM (EGS which still has a version of 26.06.2008 ):

  • GA6HP19Z (19.11)
  • ZUSB (Assembly number): 7583977
  • VIN: CT28393
  • Part number: 7576211
  • Variant: 534D
  • GROUP: GS19D
  • D_EGS 215.44.1

The car left the factory with this transmission:
  • - N52NB25; N53B25 01/2007 09/2007 ZF - 6HP21 WNK- NT: 2400 - 7572454; AT: 2400 - 7565595 / 1071 030 021 (1071 032 071)

But has today this transmission:
  • - N52NB30; N53B30 01/2007 08/2007 ZF - 6HP21 - NT: 2400 - 7568226; AT: 2400 - 7565593 / 1071 030 020

I was asked by an independent local ZF representative to perform a software update for the EGS, then an adaptations relearn procedure, but I have questions:
  • - Can I still keep the current transmission or am I obliged to look for the original 1071 030 021 ?
  • - What is the real difference between 1071 030 021 and 1071 030 020 ?
  • - If you recommend just an EGS (TCM) software update, which assembly number should I use? The 530i NU91 (7603584) or the 523i NU11 (7603578)
FYI, DME and EGS are error-free. No error codes whatsoever when scanning the car with ISTA+.

Best regards,

Why didn't you take it straight back to the dealership? Surely there was some sort of guarantee?

Hello. No the gurantee ended in 2014. Swapped trans was mounted in 2018 (beginnig of 2018).
Whole car ECUs update performed in 2016.
Dealership in my region is known for scams.

When was the auto box fitted.
Did it do this straight away.
Sounds like a faulty box to me.

It was fitted in 2018.
There are no error codes on DME or EGS. No slipping, no bind-ups, no flare-ups. Just Jolts and some Torque converter humming.
The transmission is not really fauly. Yet the firware it has currently acts as if the engine was a 3.0L while in fact the car has a 2.5L.
I am confused on which assembly number I need to flash on it.

you should use the ZUSB from the 523i, it is better matched to the power and torque characteristics of the engine, If i was to take a guess i'd say the gearbox will feel a little more lively with the 523i Flash. I notice both the gearboxes are from Left hand drive vehicles, Did you have the work done outside of the UK? I Have had 3 diesel Bmw's with this gearbox fitted and 2 of them had a sharp jolt when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear but not from 3rd to 2nd. gearbox flash with the latest ZUSB did'nt help. the current one has 177,000 miles on original oil and works perfectly.

Thanks for the hint. Indeed since it s the same mechatronics unit in both cars, logically I should put the Zusb of the 523i. But I am afraid it does not take into consideration internal mechanical differences between the 021 and 020 boxes. I ignore what difference is there. More clutches in a hub?
Yes the car is french and was serviced in a French dealership.
The 2->3 upshift jolt is a common issue on zf6hp due to either a heavy wear on clutch B pack or some parts of the valve body. A software update cannot cure however, i have seen some being cured by the use of Lubegard Titanium and fresh fluid along with a relearn procedure.

Even the sport automatic trans option is the same box, only the lever and firmware is different, i’ve converted mine with the addition of the sport button but left off the paddles.
