Hi guys,

Yesterday I noticed that when the engine is idle there is a rattling noise coming out of the bonnet.
As soon as I press the clutch it might keep doing it, but when I release the clutch with the first gear and the car starts moving the rattling disappear.
I didn't noice any sliding when accelerating. The car has 80000 miles.

I wonder what it could be the cause before taking it to the dealer/shop and investigate the problem.

Could it just be the clutch plates given the mileage?
Where is in or around London a very good BMW garage where to repair it and potentially replace the clutch?
I guess the cost at the main dealer would be around 1000 pounds for the full kit including the flywheel.

Thanks.

If the noise disappears when you depress the clutch it could be the release bearing chattering because of worn bearings or worn fingers on the pressure plate. If the clutch is not slipping when you accelerate it is likely that the release bearing and or pressure plate being worn is the cause of the noise. Best look for an independant gearbox clutch specialist for a quote as gear box will have to come out to put in new bits. Whilst the box is out replace the friction plate as well since you have 80k miles on it.
