I have just bought a set of contours with 7.5" fronts and 8.5" rear.
My question is, they have 225/45 on the fronts and 245/40 on the rears, is there any reason for the different profile? Can I get away with narrower tyres on the rears? (I've only got a 318is)

hey ben...think the reason the rears are wider is coz (i think)its rear wheel drive and better for traction..could be wrong....dont think you can go narrower tyres on th back tho..it looks better anyway m8!!

Thanks for the quick reply.
I understand the rears are wider for traction reasons, but I was wondering why the fronts where 45 profile and the wider rears are 40 profile.

It's all about keeping the tyre rolling radius correct as mentioned by Deano:thumbsup

If the wheels are wider on the back then stick with the size you have on there:thumbsup

Ah that makes sense. Think someone told me before about the profile being percentage of the width.

Thanks for the info guys :thumbsup
