couple of Q's if someone could give me some advice that would be great, ok here goes:

1) whats the difference between wax and polish?

2) is it true that you shouldnt wax/polish a car too often as it can wear out the original paintwork?

3) After hand washing my car and drying it off with a chamois I want a one product solution, none of that "use this product first, then use that" to make my car look gorgeous and shiny. Which product should I go for?

I have heard and read on this forum scary stories about wax/polish leaving behind swirls / dry powdery residue that needed paint correction etc, I want to stay well clear of any product that has a chance of damaging the original paintwork of my car.

p.s I dont have an electric polishing machine and my car is metallic Titan Silver, cheers and sorry for the long post :thumbsup

Polish is a abrasive, its supposed to help remove any defects such as swirls. Wax is non abrasive and therefore means you can use it without any worry and it should be used after polish to help retain the finish.

Ive never had any residue left on my car after a polish/wax..i hear the odd stories but thats about it..

Ok, looks like I want to stay clear of polish then because the paintwork on mine is mint. Whats the best non abrasive car wax, just to give my car a nice shine/finish, money can buy?

Anyone recommend a good product?

I have just used this on my car, given two applications and it seems to be lasting really well. Shop on ebay and you can get it down to c£25 as opposed to Halfrauds £40.

I first thought this was a joke, lol, do you use this stuff? Their website looks cool, hows the product? How long does the shine last?

Ok, been doing some Googling and I think I might go for the R222 Pure Carnauba wax. Its been getting brilliant reviews but with one niggle that it doesn't last more than about 3 weeks.

Can anyone vouch for this product?

I use Collinite, 915 Concours D'elegance......... best stuff around IMHO.........

Autoglym, not bad, but not Brilliant, Dodo Juice is good, as is Poorboys... and Demon shine ain't too bad if you don't wanna spend 9 hours at a time (like me.....) cleaning your car.....

This is my civic (this gets washed most often..... as my BM' is mostly garaged...)...

ok , just ordered the Collinite 915 wax (small tub), comes with 2 applicator pads and 3 microfiber clothes, £30 delivered, ebay.
Weather permitting saturday will be the day (if it arrives by then).

is the Collinite 915 and 916 two different products? I couldn't find the 916??

I have read this stuff lasts quite long! cant wait to do some work on the car this weekend!

Hi,

The wax lasts roughly 6-8 months depending on level of application and cleaning regime, with mine most if not all dirt is removed with a light jet wash (soft spray to loosen dirt) and then a 'mit' over with some shampoo..... nothing too taxing, but I redo my application every month.... when possible. Yours should last longer, as your car is silver, mine being black get dirty as you turn round to wet your mitt again..... Sigh :-(

Sorry I meant 915, 926 is the other one (IIRC.....), one gives deeper lustre but only last 3 months or so, apparently.....(the 926 or whatever that is, the 915 is just as good, reapply once a month or once every other month and it'll be shiny always.... ) I buy mine off ebay from the US... ($27 plus shipping worked out with the conversion as about 28 quid for two tubs, I have yet to finish my first, I'm close but not quite there) ... but some goods deals can be found all over....

Tip for using wet the pad and work it around the tin to get the wax soft and almost like a past, I can do my whole bonnet from one pad fill.... it need to look ever so slightly hazy (imagine a cold mornings frosty paint work....) don't put it on too thick, rooky mistake ;-) put it on very thin and do two or three layers this way it is easier to buff off, work one panel at a time and you'll be done in no time.... I used the foam app pads to put it on and two micro-fibres one to buff off, then another to buff up.....

I've had BMW products, never really been happy, but I'm picky..... ;-) Much is made by Autoglym & Megs anyways.....

That's cheap, but don't forget the charge made by the dealer to sync the OBD to wipe the fault codes associated with the polish. :hihi:hihi

Wouldn't surpise me in the least in my present mood of having a downer on BMW...mad

forgot to ask, I know the applicator pad should be moist/damp but when buffing off/up, should I do it with a damp cloth or keep that one dry?

Definitely dry....... unless you have accidentally added too much wax then buff with a damp cloth then with a dry one, otherwise it shouldn't be necessary....

I dont, I just wash it every weekend, handwash with car shampoo and rinse with a jet spray- thats it.

I wash it every weekend so the car looks nice and shiny all the time, but then I saw some pics in the detailing forum, the one where that bird shat over the car in Bristol (my god that was some crazy sh*t on the car, never seen anything like it in my whole life), and suddenly thought need to wax/polish my car!

LOL, or buy a shotgun and a bird scarer...... ok, it will still do a great job and it does protect your paint finish well.....

That is a great point. Have a go at claying, it is not as hard as it may appear and the difference is tremendous. :thumbsup
