I have a 330ci coupe, 2000 (M54 engine)

I have noticed my 330ci is burning a lot on engine oil of late, prob aropund 1lt per 1000-1500 miles - BMW say this is within tolerance and from I have read not uncommon. My car is due an oil service and i was thinking of changing to a higher viscocity oil that I have been advised may cure the problem.

I currenltly use Castrol edge 0w 30 and was cosndiering changing to 5w 30.

A local independent specialist say they use oil from Morris Lubricants...what the hell is that stuff - never heard of it before in my life and not approved by BMW.

What grade oil are you using - keen to know other M54 oil consumption figurs too..

I use Castrol Edge 0w 30 had an oil service a month ago never had any problems, check the oil level bi weekly, hasnt moved from the max mark and ive done 1500 miles?

1ltr for approx 1,000 miles is accepted as the norm as it appears to be common with BMWs.

Was you car using significantly less oil or no oil for every 1,000/1,5000miles before as you mention 'as of late' or has it always been like this?

I think it has started using a little more recently - it is due an oil service - ff that makes any difference.

Car is running very well though.

Does anyone know if their 5w30 meets BMW specifications....?

Check out Fuchs oil available from GSF. Seems to be high quality at a sensible price.

Use any oil that meets ACEA A3 and LL01. Royal Purple 5W30 doesn't.

Hi, I've also got an oil question. I'm afriad my car's a bit mroe modest than yours though! 1996 E36 318 iS (M44).

Which oil should I be using? The owner's handbook says 5W30 is suitable for air temps -20 to 20C if I remember rightly, but 10 or 15W40 suits -10 to 30 which surely is more appropriate for the UK?

However when i searched for oil on Opieoil.co.uk most of their recommendations were 0 or 5W40. A dealer said they would always use Castrol XLR (?) 0W30 or Mobil 1 5W30.

I'm confused! I know I want a good brand of fully-syn but have no idea about the viscosity spec. Can anyone help out?

M1 5W30 doesn't meet spec just like RP 5W30, it's only ACEA A1 so to thin and worse the HTHS is to low. Remember most XW30's don't meet spec (ACEA A3 and LL01)

My handbook doesn't mention ACEA specs, it uses some other, persumably out of date system.

So I'm right to use a W40?

TBH mate mine did that.... I used to put my foot down only way to get more oil to ya miles is drive like a granny... but its a 330ci. Ive investigated it quite a bit and seems its just something about that engine... i could be wrong.
