Try dig up a wiring diagram, failing that a late 97 E36 WITH heated seats and see if they're used... yes I can imagine "Hello, have you got heated seats?" might be an odd start to a conversation

 

I think they are for the seat belt buckle pretensioner. In a crash they pull the belts tight.

Yes, the airbag light is on. But these yellow connectors are completely different from the occupancy sensor connector (which is plugged in, but may be faulty).

 

if the seat belt pre tensioners are unplugged or faulty that too will put the airbag light on as there part of the same system
