i wan't another bmw this one will be 100% mine as i'll give the wife the 318i e36.
i'm not sure what would be better though just getting a 2 door of same version (btw i want mine to be a 2 door) or another model what everyone recomend.
i'll have the money soon once i sell the fish tank (marine for £2,500-£3,000) so i'll have about that. don't want to spend all though would be nice to give kids 500 each:thumbsup

E36 all the way:thumbsup

You should be able to get a cracker for the desired amount if you look carefully. 1st off decide what size engine you would like and then look for full service history by BMW or independent specialist. With the full service history you won't need to be deterred by mileage accept for signs of wear and possible bush replacements:thumbsup

4 doors will be cheaper than two doors. You may be able to find a 4 door with all the toys for the same price as a bog standard 2 door:thumbsup

Don't eliminate the tourer either, they are actually cool................. In my opinion;)

If you can mate try to go for the 6 cylinder. Imo they are much better.
The biggest mistake i made was thinking i would be happy with the 1.8.
6months and a shit load of money later, i got bored.
Ive now got a 325 and its much better to drive and it does pretty much the same to the gallon as the 1.8!:confused
Not quite as sharp handling because of the extra 100kgs over the front, but such a sweet engine.
Like A20 says, the tourings are cool. They look excellent slammed and on m3 rims. A bit different from the crowd too. :thumbsup
Hope this helps a bit, but just speaking from my experiences with my 2 cars. :)

YOu haven't mentioned what you require from teh car???? For £2.5K I'd be expecting the mother of 3 series (non M3). Something like mine, where everything beyond imagination has been done, for the sake of doing it.

Personally a well cared for E36 6cyl should be a competent car and something that serves you well and also be easy to maintain. But... is it worth having 2 E36's?? There's a nice number of various E34/E39 5 series cars about (much better quality wise than the E36) and you'll get change from £3K quite easily.....

They do look sweet, hows this for some inspiration?

I'd just got with a nice 328i coupe then.....

320 = 6cyl noise with 4 cyl go
323i = I will never understand the purpose of the 323 .....
325i = very nice
328i = rarest of the bunch to be seen on the road so you get a wee feeling of knowing you've got something a little more special.

323 or 328 but make sure you read up on Nikasil! Don't underestimate the 323, it's not all about the quoted bhp! They are plenty quick enough, esp compared to any of the 1.8's and has lots of tuning potential.

I can't see the point in the 320 if you can afford to go bigger. The 325 is getting on a bit now. However, if you are looking at Nikail's 323/328's the 325 might be a safer bet!

On that budget I'd try to avoid buying trouble by looking for the youngest 323 I could find.

If you can stretch to about 2k you'll get a fantastic car for the money. I paid just over 2k for my '99 318iS but for that, I got full service history, all paperwork from the original buyer, an extremely well looked after car, only 2 previous owners, and only 65k on it. Its very much worth it. Good luck :thumbsup

get a 328, if you can afford to run it then theres no point in getting anything smaller, mine does 24-28mpg town driving but thats letting the revs build up quite high(sounds far to good not to) ive done 160miles on 20 quid and that was with plenty of enthusiastic driving. mine has got just under 145k and it still runs perfect, all its had since ive owned it is an oil change with decent oil and a new filter and thats all it needed really, i hadnt started it in a couple of months, went outside first turn of the key and it fired up instantly and ran with no worries at all so if you can find a good condition 328 do not let it go past you cos you will regret it.

like i said get the 328, they are plenty quick enough to have fun and well looked after models are likely to last a lot longer than some of the lower end models, plus they come with better spec for similar money to the lower end models, they are easy to drive aswell so the missus wont have any issues if she has to use it. and i wouldnt worry about the nikasil issue because i dont think it will affect you as your looking for a good condition one, if you were on a tighter budget and was going to get a cheaper higher mileage one i would advise against it but you will be fine, just remember to use all good quality parts on it and it will love you back

i could be wrong about this but im sure someone will put me right if i am...
basically nikasil is a lining inside the engine, because the m52 block is alloy it needs a harder bit of metal for the piston to rub against to prevent wear so they used nikasil, this became a problem due to cheaper fuel(i think) the cheaper fuel wore down the nikasil causing engine damage, im not going to go into it to much because im not that clued up on it but basically ppl brought this cheap fuel and it had an adverse affect on the engine causing all sorts of problems.

like i say im not that clued up on it but i dont think you need to worry as you have the money to buy a better example model with lower miles or to put it more bluntly, to buy a car thats not been owned by a bunch of tight fisted w*@£&rs

edit i was quite intrested in this so i had a quick look, this is worth a read.

dont use 6x9's cos they look horrible, bet yea you can fit speakers there as its just a card, if you take the card out you will see there is a loarge hollow area and there is plenty of room to weld in some bracing to accomodate whatever you want to put in, if you have a look at A20 car you will notice he has put in speakers in the rear seats...not actually the seats but the bits of trim that goes next to it wich is a really nice touch and should be relatively easy to achieve.
