it was jointly designed by ZF and BMW for their big torque diesels cos as mentioned before it nobody actually made a box strong enough to handle big diesel torque for domestic cars prior to it...

buy an ex motorway use miler and that box will have seen far less detrimental torque abuse pain than an urban used one...

Ah, just read about it on wiki. I like this big:

It also has the capability to achieve torque converter lock-up on all six forward gears, and disengage it completely when at a standstill, dramatically closing the fuel efficiency gap between automatic and manual transmissions.

Everything you said makes logical sense to me, motorway one would be better. I'll try, lots to chose from.
