hi all. most of you will probably know about the problem with my car. it seems it is registered on the vehicle check sites, hpi, my car check,etc as a cat b write off. i called dvla today to see what they say and as far as they are concerned the car is not or never has been a write off. i spoke to esure insurance last friday when this was bought to my attention by a forum member and they confirmed that the car is a write off and promptly voided my insurance. i called them again this evening and told them what dvla said and the girl i spoke to replyed that there is nothing on their system . she checked with a supervisor who told me' there is nothing on our system saying the car is a write off and we get our info from dvla'. she also says there is no record of my phone call last week. i did a cheap check with 'mycarcheck.com' and it indeed comes up as a cat b write off. can anyone offer any advice on what to do next as i havent got a clue. dvla say they cannot help, as far as they are concerned a logbook is on its way to me and there is no issues with my car. esure say they cannot help as as far as they are concerned there are no issues with the car. cheers all

Why would other sites record the car as a write off if the DVLA is the prime source from which info is sourced from and DVLA is saying its clean?
Forget the insurance, but just ensure that they reinstate your policy.
Have you considered the police? could they help or point you in the right direction as they have specialised vehicle units and assessors with know how etc.

Someone needs to take responsibility for the accuracy of the information!
If the V5's on it's way to you it can't have been recorded as a Cat B. I'd point this out to your insurance company! Surely your insurance company need to speak to the DVLA as if you have the V5 that kind of prooves the point?

Could it be that somebody has scammed an insurance company using your plates or reg number on a different car??? There are so many possibilites as to why it is coming up as a write off....could just be a genuine mistake....you really need to find out exactly which insurance company has written it off then you can find out more info and get info on who holds the pictures if they still do of the car which was written off.

Wierd one this!
I would contact the sites who have listed it as Cat B and tell them their info is wrong, and ask them where they are getting it.
Get them to check the DVLA status while you are there, it could be a bug in the DVLA system causing the problem?

A vehicle with a private plate usually will get it's original plate back when the private plate is removed.
As others have said a Cat B car should only be sold onto a registered salvage agents and they need to destroyed.
Cat D's can be put straight back on the road (after a MOT) and Cat C's can be put on a road after a VIC check and MOT.
Isn't it the DVLA who holds the details and the insurers simply notify the DVLA to make it official? As such if you have the V5 it can't be written off.
If you can't get anywhere on the phone would your local DVLA office be able to help you with this?

It sounds really bizzare to me, the number plate theory might be a possibility? Other than that there must be a mistake in the DVLAs system, that can happen I've seen it happen before at work.
Everyone you speak to from now on, write their name down and the time you spoke to them. Also, demand to speak to supervisors or section managers, you might be able to squeeze out more answers.... or you could try the Police, but I am sure they will tell you to contact the DVLA.

hi all i have spoken to hpi who said that if i had a hpi check done on the car they would follow this up for me, so i paid up and had a check done and it still came up cat b write off. i spoke to hpi again and told them that dvla had no record of this car being a write off. they checked and replyed that that they contacted the insurance company who wrote the car off and thay confirmed it is a cat b. i asked how come dvla have no record as surely if an insurance co writes a car off as serious as a cat b they are responsible for informing dvla they replied taht was correct and it must be a mistake on dvla records. i am stumped now.it looks like i will have to scrap the car. i would rather sell it whole as i am sick of looking at it. any advice?. cheers all.

Hi SteveJoe... I am not in any means an expert on this but i can tell you i had a friend who had a VERY similar problem when she bought a new car.. Turns out the guy she had bought her car from had (it was a 2002 plate car) put a replacement plate on the car - Turns out the plate was actually sent from and EBAY co, who had sent the previous owner the wrong reg plate but for the same car
confused as my friend called the insurance company she simply looked outside told them the reg and was told it was a write off... so she called the previous owner and after a fair few hours this came to light.. YOU NEVER KNOW that could be the same prob, if not :frown then you are prob best braking the car and selling it for parts... We have done that on a few cars and on a few occassion made more than we actually paid for the car....Good luck...:thumbsupIf you want it gone, just get rid.......... you consider talking to the chap to gently raise all the cars good points and squeeze a bit more out of him

Hi, I find it a bit strange that you were on about breaking the car over a £100 part before you announced it's a Cat B. As none of our members are legally allowed to break the car (unless they are a registered salvage agent) I think it's time to close this thread.
If any member is interested in parts from the car they can send you a PM.
