Eighteen months ago I convinced my best friend to buy an E60 530d Auto saloon from our local BMW dealership. The car is metallic blue, leather etc etc and came with a BMW warranty and was 'like new'. 30ish k miles on it then.

For nearly two years he has run the 55 plate stunner up to a mind boggling 56,000 miles. It has been serviced by the dealership and last weekend he contemplated putting it in and his wifes Z4 for a 730d.... mad I know but it is £22k and a beautiful looking beast.

This week the 5 series went in as it suddenly started 'missing', no warning lights, just a slight miss and a shaky rev. counter needle. As norm. straight to the dealership for investigation. And this is the result:

Swirl flaps have broken, entered the engine and caused 'irepairable' damage. These are are the costs:

Px price prior to this £9k :thumbsup
Cost of replacement engine £12k...... yes Twelve thousand pounds.:jaw-dropping
BMW Good will - £6k but he has to pay the £1,100 diagnosis bill :eek

Dealer solution: Leave the car there, forget it. Z4 (valued at £11 1/2k + £4k and take out a 320d which is 3 1/2 year old with 31k miles on it. :talktothehand

I feel aweful as I 'found' the car for the guy but for someone who has bought 4 BMW's in 2 years from this dealer is the above a good deal???

Surely the car with a knackered engine is worth something???????

Any help at this desperate time would be appreciated from such a knowledgable group.

For those of you who are wondering whether or not to change the F%*£ing things - DO IT - before you are left with figures like this.

Thanks for taking the time to read. :thumbsup

That's nasty :mad I can understand your pain though with regards to being the person who 'set up the deal'.
If he bought it 2 years ago, which would be have been 2009 and therefore means the dealer was selling a 4 year old car, only 1 year outside of the manufacturer warranty....did he get some kind of extended warranty with it?

I would argue that if the likes of KIA and Vauxhal can offer such long warranties then a BMW dealer selling one of the higher end models should offer a similar thing.
Honestly, they are perfectly aware of this problem, imo it's much like the e46 M3 floor/subframe problem. Do not back down and argue, rightly so, that a car like that should not go SOO wrong after such a short time.

Does he have the option of taking the good will as credit against the new car?

If so would look like the incident means he is £4K down approx? As that would be a cheap amount to get out of the situation, finding another £4K to have the car he wants seems not too bad an option.

My 2p's worth....

Get the car back from the dealer and to a local independent then source a 2nd hand engine and put it back together...

12k is outrageous, as is the £1100 diagnostics....:frown

I don't know where in Wales you are based, but I can give you the names of a couple in North Wales who are good....:thumbsup

Trenics, RG Lewis or even Smiths.....;)

i agree but can you say its a great situation to be in in the first place for a 5 year old car?? ide throw up and sh+t myself at the same time i think...

its a disaster and an awfull and shocking mess of biblical proportions.....

where are all the pro diesel brigade to give moral support to the guy??

I've got to say, I think all the options of a second hand engine fitted at a specialist are good! but not just yet.
On a car of that value, with those miles that's seemingly had everything done at the main dealer, I would not be leaving until I'd exhausted EVERY opportunity/argument that you should not be paying for this.
As I say, they know about the swirl flap issue and you should stand your ground that it's not acceptable. I would argue that a prestige car such a 5 year old BMW should develop a catasrophic failure that results in a £12,000 bill!

I don't disagree with you for a single moment, if it were my car I would be at the dealers with a bat..... Not a chance that they would get that sort of cash, or my business ever again - just trying to find the silver lining for the OP... Some of those engines are really low mileage and warranted with a reasonable price tag.

It seems like the best solution considering the situation....

What have you guys done to defend against this swirl flaps issue?

Have you all fitted blanking plates?

Ive just bought a 2004 535D so how do I check or sort it?

Should I be worried?
