when turning, every now and then the steering makes a noise like a cow mooing. Also it is fairly unresponsive and wont centre itself hardly at all. Iv checked the fluid and it looks topped up when just looking in the lid, if i turn the steering though would the level change? Could it still need topping up?

It should change as you move side to side, so measure it only when straight ahead.
You may have a worn pump, or as a wildcard, check there isn't a broken engine mount and the engine is sitting on the steering rack.

To check the level, wheels ahead, take the cap off and clean it, and just rest it on the reservoir, the level should be on the middle level of the dipstick under the cap.

or u could have an air lock in your steering to check this take the top of your steering bottle and start the car leaving all 4 wheels on the ground and turn from left to right on full lock do this for about 5 minutes and that will get shut of any air lock you have and then straighten the wheels and check your levels and then top if required if that does not get shut of the noise or heavyness of the steering wheel then u could have a problem with your slip ring or like the end say`s your steering rack or pump

Have a look at the universal joints on your steering column, as the column runs past the exhaust manifold the heat dries out the joints. A friend of mine had a similar issue, used some spray grease or a dab of oil then worked the steering to get it through the joints, losened them up after a while and it was all good after that. Jus an idea.
