My brother and I are doing a job at the moment replacing someones guttering. We're replacing all of the original 1930's metal guttering with modern plastic stuff all round the house, a pretty big house too. Anyway we've left the old guttering we've taken down in the clients driveway (I asked my brother to put it round the back but he said it would be fine) and covered it over.

Bare in mind that when we take it to the local scrap yard we're looking at about £100 worth of stuff.

We turn up to work this morning and it's all gone?! Apparently the client got a knock on the door at about 8am from a couple of blokes with a van who said 'Hi, we're here for the guttering'. Obviously the client thinks they're with us and lets them take the stuff away.

That's a £100 profit gone on a job that we weren't making much on anyway! I have no idea who they were or where they've gone but I do know they're £100 up from the stuff I've just spend 2 days pulling down. I know it happens a lot with pikeys turning up to building sites and taking stuff to sell on but to trick our client is not on! Don't really have a leg to stand on because they had the home owners permission.:mad:mad:mad

Its a common problem nowadays especially with metal prices as high as they are.
We had a big problem with people nicking the drain covers from roads and chopping off catalytic converters from peoples cars for scrap.
Pulled over 2 lads in an astra van a few weeks ago with 8 catalytic converters,2 hydraulic cutters and a generator....youre nicked

There must have been enough guttering to do Buckingham Palace 4 times over to be worth a £100, it's worth bugger all, I know I do a lot of scrap metal ns cast aint worth anything unless you got a container ship full of it.

Same problem at my work, they're always trying to nick stuff. If it aint pikeys its junkies, cant stand them. I recently got a new kitchen fitted and some c**ts stole the old boiler and sink from the back of my house, would have been worth a few bob that probably got spent on heroin instead of on the car! :mad

Our xmas bonus at work comes from cashing in the years scrap...Old copper pipe, lead from roofs we've re-done, boilers, cookers...anything we have to remove/strip on our jobs.

We have 3 big containers down the back of our yard, were its all put. Some t**ts decided to knick off with them over the summer. They broke down the gate to get to them, and then took that aswell :eek

I know its only spending money to us, but it still f**ks your Xmas up when you dont get it :frown Its the difference between being able to buy a few pints for your mates, and get some fireworks for new year, or sit at home bored senseless. This year, we wont see anything :mad

Well there was a hell of a lot of it, we'd also done the 2 neighbours guttering (all detached houses) and were storing it all on this guys drive, we'd even knocked some money off his quote to store it on his premises. The guy from the scrap yard reckoned we had about £100 worth but maybe he was wrong. I hope he was wrong, I'd love to see their faces after they'd gone to all that effort loading it and get offered a few quid:hihi

It's not so much the money but the way they tricked our client, 'Hi we're here for the guttering'.

Working in the industry I do we use a lot of copper plate in various sizes
we also use a lot of copper cable to wire the units also in various sizes.
We used to have a regular stint of the 20' and 10' containers which we built being stripped of all the copper bearing in mind the 20' containers have 9 @150mmx10mm in thickness at 3-4 mtrs in length and then 9 droppers each using about 3 mtrs of [email protected]
to connect the elements takes about 20 mtrs of 38mmx3mm copper they stripped the unit in one night it takes 3 blokes to put the long 4mtr coppers in and the 38x3 coppers are help in place by about 400 2ba nuts that takes 2 blokes using a battery gun 4 hrs to do.
they obviously were watching the place for a while and were tooled up for the job.
now we have more cctv, proximity senors and electric gates.
There lucky the unit next to it was connected to a 10kv transformer as it was being prepaired for test sweeping brushes at the ready

Thats right Bill, only scrap worth having is Copper, Brass, Lead, Stainless Steel, Car Batteries, and Cats.

Old boilers, radiators, cast soil pipes and guttering are all a waste of fuel getting to the scrapyard.

Unfortunatly, the scumbags have started cruising my street over the last few months :( Never had a problem until little while ago.

So far, they've stolen a cat (Which WAS going to be used again), 2 old rusty brake disc's (These were scrap, but they pinched them without saying anything) and some misc' scrap metal I had on my drive (which had been there for years, and I don't mind the fact it's all gone, it's nice to have my drive back, but either way, they took it all without consent).

Anything of 'worth' to them, I now hide away ! The boot of my old Saloon has 8 scrap brake disc's, but I can assure you, they f00kers ain't having them. I'd rather take them down the council tip !

I was working on my car today and a van pulled up and the bloke said "Got any scrap pal"..... I just said "No", and went back to what I was doing.... But what I was thinking is, first i'm not your 'pal', and second, what happened to the word 'please' ?

We're getting some building work done and so far they've taken from the front garden the old bath, the old piping, the old boiler, and our old garden chairs :jaw-dropping

I've got my 17's wrapped with new dunlops in the back garden ready for winter let's hope they don't bloody come and take those too. :hihi

Crazy though I couldn't imagine every piece of metal is worth that much :shifty:
